I have just recently been turned on to Esoteric by Lizardtail's review. Try them.

I second metalNESS on the Esoteric.

Also, try Shape of Despair or Evoken.

Just ordered Nortt's split with Xasthur.

You're right, life has been far, far, far too good recently.

Since Amazon doesn't have too much Doom, does anyone know where I can find this stuff?

HELLRIDE MUSIC has a lot of good doom, check out the messageboard for recommendations and whatnot. The Gates Of Slumber is the first band I've picked up from Hellride, but they sound like they're going to be excellent.

You can't go wrong with BRAINTICKET RECORDS, that's John Perez's website. John is the guitarist in Solitude Aeturnus so he sure as fuck knows his doom!!

Also, check out DOOM-METAL.COM, a great website for all things doom metal. You should be able to find your way to a ton of killer bands through this site.

Hope this helps.

Funeral doom is probably the answer.. check out Skepticism and Tyranny in addition to the above suggestions.

don't dismiss black metal either, it has some potently depressing stuff. Forgotten Tomb and Shining are great, and then there's the obvious stuff like Xasthur and some later Burzum.. someone grimmer than me could suggest more bands in that vein.

Nargaroth's Rasluka EPs are plenty depressing. Then there's his epic songs from Black Metal Ist Krieg (Seven Tears Are Flowing To The River and the other long one...).

Forgotten Woods, Leviathan, Leper's debut, Bleak's first EP... there are assloads of depressive black metal bands.

Funny, all this depressive & suicidal black doesnt have the same effect on me, quitte opposite... and Nortt sounds very dream like to me, sad, but it doesnt make me feel that way. Then again, I dont really listen to doom so...

Sunday Morning Coming Down - Johnny Cash.

There is no more depressing thought than a Sunday.
