I've become a really big fan of basically really whiny metal like Agalloch, Woods of Ypres, the latest Primordial really rocked me, and bands like maudlin of the Well.

What are some suggestions along the line of, especially, the first three there? I don't really know what you could classify them as, but Agalloch and Woods have been two of my favourite bands for a couple years now, but I dunno any other bands like them.

Earlier Wyrd, perhaps? Windir? I'd say Bathory and Borknagar but we're not very whiny...

Virgin Black, mainly the album Sombre Romantic?

I have only listened to Agalloch and Primordial out of your suggestions so I may be a bit off base.

I guess it's not that whiney, but I consider any negative emotion to be whining. I just really dig the sound of bands like Woods of Ypres. It's very smooth and engrossing, almost like sludge metal without the sludge. Doom metal outside of Candlemass kind of bores me, though.

I'll check those bands out, Zad. Thanks.

The thing with the whining in both Agalloch and Woods of Ypres' music is that both bands have excruciatingly bad vocalists who, indeed, whine. If you're interested in a better vocalist and a more authentic depressing mood, try In the Woods.

Virgin Black's Sombre Romantic is awesome! I got some Windir, too. Thanks for the suggestions. I love this style of metal more than any music right now.

I know what you mean. If these other bands sound remotely like virgin black I will have to check them out as well.

As for Virgin Black's other two albums, they aren't too bad either but they are definitely slower and deeper than Sombre Romantic but worth checking out.
