The more I listen to them, the more I hear Gothenburg. |

Maybe their last album, but the older stuff is definitely black metal. It's just black metal made by guys that knew how to play their instruments well and weren't afraid to hide it. |

There's very little black metal in their music. More like a harsher gothenburg with black metal vocals. |

Melodic Death Metal all the way. Dissection has certainly influenced many a Black Metal band, but they are not Black Metal in the least. |

I feel the same way as this. Although, there is kind of a grim frostbitten atmosphere that comes from BM that most gothenburg stuff doesn't have. |

Due to the extremely signifcant fact that Dissection was always fueled by Satan, and that Jon conceived every song to praise the Lord I'm positive that Dissection was a true black metal band (despite some thrash/death influenced riffing) ;) |

The music isn't very black metal although there are influences, but the atmosphere it conveys is very close to it. I don't care what it is, or isn't, however, their first two albums are superior to any black metal album I know either way. |

And as we all know - black metal is first and foremost atmosphere. |

Pfft. Yes, black metal is all atmosphere but black metal is black metal. And gothenburg is gothenburg. By that logic someone can make a black metal record with a string quartet, which somehow seemed like a good idea instantly as I was trying to prove the opposite. Hmmm. Can something still be black metal but made with other instruments and/or following other influences in music (like gothenburg in this case)? I think this can make a thread of his own. I'm not so sure about my answer, honestly. |

Take some records of Henrik Nordvargr Bjork. Mz.412 for instance. It's industrial, dark ambient but the atmosphere is pure black metal. |

Don't know the latter but I agree with sunn O))) and also Nortt can be considered black metal in that sense. But does it qualify only because of it's bleak atmosphere? |
