It's amazing, overall just an amazing album. As of right now, I think it's the best work they've done.

I think this might be the best album I've ever heard...

I'll post again if I change my mind. But I will say this: if this site gives the album any less than 95, I'll never respect any review it ever puts out again.

Man, the intro to Beneath the Mire is so fucking awesome. I can't get enough of it. :)

The only song I've heard is 'The Baying Of The Hounds', and I wasn't that impressed, frankly.

Better than their older stuff, says you?

I need to listen through this again, obviously.. I sat through it yesterday and found it quite pleasant, but not spectacular. With all the 100%'s flying around I think it might be worth one more listen..

The one track I heard was boring and not a worthwhile riff or melody was to be heard, but then I've heard at least a few people call it the only weak spot in the album. Might have been Grand Conjuration, but I forget. It was on some internet radio thing.

Either way I was trying to wait for this one to actually come out, since Opeth is...well, Opeth. But it keeps getting harder to resist.

Is the Grand Conjuration the only song that has stop-start riffs? I really hope so, as I can't stand to hear Opeth do stop-start riffs. Just doesn't sound like them at all. I liked the song live, but it didn't hold up to the rest of the stuff. Maybe because they followed it with the mighty Demon of the Fall.

Well, Opeth has never done stuff with low viscosity, or lots of dynamics if you want to call it that way. They have always been a aband that likes a little bit avant garde-ish stop and go type music. For which I don't like them at all as you probably already know. I like comparable bands with far better dynamics such as Agalloch better (despite the boyband vocals).

I listened to it again, it's very good but I'd give it more like 79/100 because it's very, very familiar, and also because I'm not happy with the slightly more modern approach in some of the songs. 79/100 is still considered "great" or whatever, so.. you know, I think it's fair.

Blackwater Park's my favourite, if you want to pick my decision to bits.

I'm going to go against popular opinion here and say this sucks just as much as all other Opeth albums.

Hmm, I'd say it sucks a little more, if possible... It's even more boring than the older stuff. And don't get me wrong, I can sit through a 15 minute wind intro by paysage d'hiver!

God, I'm so sick of Opeth's shit. I'm so sick of people calling a band that's been retreading what they've already done since 1999.

Not only that, but this album is even worse than their last three. Even less energetic and passionate, filled with even more of their meandering bullshit.

As usual, it will be highly praised by just about everyone in the metal community for reasons unknown to myself. Then come the interviews: they'll be hailed as geniuses, yadda-yadda-fucking-yadda, how do you manage to create such music, you rule, can I suck your cock...

Man, I hate Opeth.

Haha, that's how I feel about a LOT of bands.

Opeth included, but to a much lesser degree than yourself. Largely because I used to be a huge fan, back when I was first getting into Metal. I still think they have some great songs but really all they ever did was hang onto Dan Swano's coattails, and they haven't done much for progressing their own sound let alone the genre, despite numerous people tagging them as "Progressive Death Metal". Hell, it's taken them 7 years just to catch up to Swano in terms of adding keyboards heavily to their modern sound. The hype is unwarranted in my opinion, but they still have their moments.

Seems more and more people are realizing the truth now, and they are sealing it with their metalcore bullshit influence.

Hrm.. it's not like I'm falling for the "Opeth are the future of metal!1" hyperbole.. I just like their music, haha. I can see why you'd prefer Agalloch but I prefer Opeth.

I'm not going to fanboy for them, though, they definetly have plenty of flaws.. people giving this CD 100/100 are probably suffering from first-listen enthusiasm. Besides, I have my work cut out fanboying for Meshuggah.

Youre right Opeth fanboys are the worst only equal to Dream Theater Fanboys,But Opeth itself is a good band is just that some people consider their music to be boring, but calling them genius, well thats insane, just like calling Pettrucci a genius
