Best Dark Tranquillity song: Shadow Duet

Just get the Skydancer and Gallery albums to start with.

If you want other Gothenburg, check out In Flames' The Jester Race, At the Gates' The Red in the Sky is Ours, Soilwork's The Chainheart Machine.

Not Slaughter of the Soul? I don't have The Red in the Sky is Ours, but I know Slaughter of the Soul might be the best melodeath album I've ever heard.

As for Dark Tranquillity, I've only got Character so I'm not really qualified to give song recommendations...but, "Lost to Apathy" and "Out of Nothing" got me into them--both are excellent songs.

If anyone says anything negative about "Slaughter", I'll have you banned. Quickly. I keed. Even though it is greatly responsible for the way the current metal scene is now.

Slaughter of the Soul is basically a direct ripoff of Carcass's Heartwork. :P

Oh and K_Brahm's recommendations are great. Not enough people have heard DT's Skydancer album. The tracks Shadow Duet and A Bolt of Blazing Gold were extremely forward thinking. Had they gone down that road they could have been one of the very best metal bands of all time.

I always thought At The Gates's first two were better than Slaughter of the Soul. Admittedly they aren't as good song-wise, but I love how rifftastic and raw they are... they're like a million billion times moar evil than SotS

Even "Under A Serpent Sun"? That riff sounds like it was written by Satan :dio:

"Final Resistance" pulled me in.

More:

"Hours Passed In Exile"
"A Single Part Of Two"
"The Treason Wall"

Those 4 are basically my favorites that I've heard.

I like Slaughter (even if I'm not happy that its responsible for the way the current metal scene is now). But I think its got nothing on early At the Gates, which, alas, not many seem to want to check out.

Slaughter really is such an influential album. Bands are popping up left and right, ripping off a band they haven't even heard of.
