Thrash can be interpreted as different concepts, ideas, sounds, etc. Being as the majority of members here are experienced with these ideas, and Thrash; what can be conceived as a consensual definition of Thrash Metal? Discuss. |

A fast paced, riff based style of music wherein punk and NWOBHM styles are mixed. Thats the best I can do while drunk.. I'll try agaub tommorow. |

my friend says that thrash metal has a certain playing technique.. he showed it to me, he struck the chord and immediatly covered it so as to "end" the sound. i have no idea what you call that in english. either way i can't tell when someone is doing that just by listening. i like my thrash fast, but you listen to stuff like Megadeth and Testament and it's not that fast, but people still call it thrash. so i don't think thrash metal has to be necessarily fast. |

Thrash metal is characterized by fast, palm muted riffs and vocals which (whilst almost never growled or roared) are usually not quite clean and fall into the chategory of either speakingmenacingly/shouting. Thrash's main appeal is not the way the riffs are constructed, but the fact that within one song their are so many riffs. Gang shouted choruses are very common to thrash and the lyrical matter is often serious (Metallica, Megadeth) some bands such as Anthrax have been known to write humorous lyrics. Thrash is the predessescor to both black and death metal, bands like Kreator and Slayer both having massive influence on the death metal scene. |

Still, there are definite riff patterns to be found in thrash. Death metal bands write fast riffs with a lot per song, but you'd never really call them thrash riffs or songs. Though a plentitude of riffs is important in thrash, I'd say riff construction takes precedence. |

Yeah, the generic thrash riff is usually a fast palm muted e-srting, followed by a power schord and some down picked palm muted notes (again, e-string). Thrash does what it says on the tin, thrash. Death metal uses a lot of un-muted notes played hideously fast on the e-string, and even some thrash riffs made more malevolant sounding. |
