I tend to see Death as sort of being in that intermediate between thrash and death metal. At least on their 90s material, they lack the speed and brutality of traditional death metal. On the other hand, they do have the gutteral vocals (albeit not really "grunts" per see - no more so than Max Calavera's used to be) and scattered melodies. What does everybody else think? |

How are death and thrash mutually exclusive? Death is a good example of a DM band that still thrashes with the best of 'em. Voted death, mainly because of the themes and atmosphere of the music, which is what really defines DM for me. (Well at least the old stuff was DM, the newer albums could more appropriately be called life metal, hehe.) |

Death are death metal. Certainly, early death metal (Possessed, early Morbid Angel) had a lot in common with thrash, and Death did as well to a certain extent, but as they moved on in their career, they definiely went towards a much more death metal sound. |

Death's debut is very close to thrash indeed, but it's just more brutal musically and with a much darker aesthetic. For me that's what makes it something different. Clearly DM grew out of thrash, so there will be overlap in all the early works. |

A lot of Death's later material is also very thrash influenced. That one riff in A Moment Of Clarity (the second one before the song speeds up) sounds almost like something Metallica would have done in the mid-80s. But yeah, I suppose death and thrash don't necessarily need to be mutually exclusive. I guess when I think of death metal I think of stuff like Nile and Cannibal Corpse (tons of blast beats, Dr. Claw-ish vocals, etc). May be I need to start listening to more DM? |

Clearly DM grew out of thrash, so there will be overlap in all the early works. True. But his new works are nowhere near thrash! |

I don't think I've ever heard somebody call Death thrash metal. I've been listening to Spiritual Healing a lot lately. "Practice what you preach!" |
