Napalm Death's death period is pretty addictive

Get the Deicide, Morbid Angel, Death and Obituary debuts. That's what I did (minus Death) Good place to start. (Florida scene anyway, Entombed-left Hand Path is a goodun when you're exploring other areas.)

I would get Cause Of Death rather than Slowly we Rot. But both are amazing.

Slowly we Rot is what made me start to love death metal, I popped it into the cars sterweo, and turned it up all the way because of the quiet....YYYYEEEEUUUUURRRRRGGGGHHH! That was a greeaaat feeling.

Don't listen to anyone but me.

The way to get into death metal is to start with the catchy stuff.

First album should be Dying Fetus - Destroy the Opposition. Catchiness + Technicality + good songwriting = win.

from The Chams i only heard "Fortress", it was pretty nice. some sort of epic thing going on.

i got into death metal through melodic death, so i'd say Children of Bodom, Soilwork ("steelbath suicide" and "chainheart machine") and of course At The Gates and The Black Dahlia Murder's "unhallowed". Into Eternity are also an excellent band.

after that, try out Death (my favourites are "Human" and "Symbolic"), Misery Index (heavy but the riffs are catchy), Zyklon (personally i like "Aeon" more), Nile (they can't go wrong), Cannibal Corpse and Cyptopsy.

Possessed's "seven churches" is a good taste of "proto-death metal" if you're curious.
