I regret not listening to this stuff sooner. They're a lot more uplifting than most BM I've heard. Anyway, can anyone recommend any progressive(ish) BM with nature/cosmos-inspired lyrics, decent clean vocals, and good bass work?

I was going to say Drudkh until I saw the clean vox...

Yeah, I guess that's the only guy in that category... he's Borknagar's latest vocalist, in case you don't know, Etherhunter.

I'll give them a try. Do you recommend an album in particular?

COSMIC. GENESIS.

If you like CG, get "Visions From The Spiral Generator" next.

Agreed, Cosmic Genesis is killer.

Well, if you like Borknagar's debut, Ulver - Bergtatt is an album you can't go wrong with. Some of Enslaved's albums also share some things with ante-Vintersorg Borknagar.

I agree, and I'd really like to add Mystic Forest - Romances
I'm not sure about the bass, but that's truly black metal, with accordeon, female vocals, natural beauty and the rest of the shitload. Daniel wrote a review on this site. You might want to go with Klabautamann - Der Ort as well, for the same reasons. www.klabautamann.de

The last two Enslaved albums are Excellent Progressive Black Metal, with philosophical lyrics. Other than that Borknagar is a pretty unique band, I most say. And Mystic Forest - Romances is an out-standing release.

Woods of Ypres, maybe?

Bathory come to mind, and Falkenbach.

Thanks for the recommendations. Falkenbach and Enslaved were already in my music listening rotation. I'll give Mystic Forest, Ulver, and all the others a try soon.
