Hit or Miss: Sepultura - Roots

Seeing as to how Roots is the kind of album people either hail a masterpiece or label one of the worst metal albums ever released, I thought it'd be interesting polling everybody on it.

For me, it's a hit. Regarding all the cries of "nu-metal"/"mallcore", ummm, wasn't this more or less the album that invented the whole nu-metal genre (no, Korn's self-titled album doesn't count since it's not metal nor was it ever supposed to be)? And you certainly can't fault Sepultura for accidentally starting a bad genre.

As for blaming Sepul, I certainly do. This album is total crap, half of the lyrics are idiotic, Max sounds like a doofus, there aren't any riffs - everything is just downtuned buzzing minus that one punky song near the end, and the whole thing is just total, total shit.

I hate Roots.

Once again I'm not voting because there isn't a "maybe" option. :wink:

Undoubtedly this was a major influence on the "nu", but clearly that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. I prefer the early records, but if I'm in the mood for something with a groove I'd take this over Chaos AD any day.

Never listened to it, but if the title track and Ratamatatamatatalatamah are anything to go by then it sucks the big one.

Roots Bloody Roots is a nice song (simplistic but nice.. especially live) and Ratamahatta is cool too.

Chaos AD was their last decent album (and my fav' of their discography but then I've never been a Sepultura fan)...

Roots is a miss

they are good songs. they'd be out of place on any of the older albums (save perhaps Chaos AD), but they are good songs.

the rest of the album is crap though.
