I saw them live last night supporting Lamb of God and they kicked ass. What are they like on record and what album should I pick up first?

Their first album sucks. I bought it used for 2.99, felt like it was a rip-off. Two decent songs does not a good album make.

Get their second one, everyone says it's much better.

They were actually pretty good live when I saw them, I haven't bothered to check out any of their studio stuff since I hear it blows.

Possibly because I was legging it around the pit like a monkey, avoiding the hardcore guy who kept punching me in the head.

Don't listen to any of them. :D No one here will agree with me, but here goes....This is NOT mallcore. What you will find on their first album is melodic death metal/metalcore/traditional death metal music with some nu-metal elements thrown in. This was admittedly intentional, Dez said he wanted to add that in the mix to sort of create a bridge for all the Coal Chamber fans to get into this band, but aside from those moments there's not a whole lot of typical nu-metal. The first album is very good. It's not nu-metal. It's not melo-death. It's not metalcore. It's not traditional death metal. It's sort of a mixture, a nice balance of all those styles, much more of the former three.

The second album is virtually absent of all nu-metal elements. I'm sure the lack of soloing will inadvertantly give the band that label by some, but it's a pretty brutal record. Call it metalcore, melo-death, whatever. It's not mallcore. The second album is the better of the two because it definitely severs virtually all ties with the Coal Chamber remnants. If you liked them live I would definitely assume you'd like them on CD and you should give them a try.

They deserve much more credit than they get. I definitely feel that most people who comment on this band in a negative way have actually never really heard them, or never actually listened, because there is a HUGE difference between hearing something and actually listening. The term "mallcore" is a retarded term, it's abused as much as the "nu-metal" term. You can't create a "genre" of music and stuff in a million bands that all sound different from each other. That makes no sense to me.

Regardless, it's all opinion, and if you liked them live that should tell you something. If you're still unsure listen to these songs:

These guys aren't that bad, based on those two samples. If this is mallcore, then I don't know what mallcore sounds like. I'm not going to go out and by an album by these guys, but they're not as bad as everybody is makeing them out to be.

So? What does that have to do with the band? Come on, annoying fans are a completely different issue that I could bitch about for weeks. I mean, I go to a 311 show and those assholes fucking MOSH! Moshing! At a 311 show? Seriously, what gives? :D

Still, I know Devil Driver aren't "traditional" enough in one genre to appeal to a lot of the purist metal fans out there, but they're not that bad, I think they're quite good. They're not a band I turn to all the time, they're not in my top anything this year, but they're not worthy of the negative comments they get. Considering the distance they put between this album and the first, I cannot wait to hear what they do on their next album. If they evolve as much between this and the next as they did between this and the first, they may actually be accepted among trad. metal fans. :shock:
