What would be a good album to start with?

Depends on whether you want to start with early stuff to see the evolution, or start with the best. If the latter, I'd say Cosmic Genesis or Visions From The Spiral Generator.

Or the new Borknagar. He's taken that band over so completely and utterly that there's not much difference left.

Get the debut album if you want to check out the cool more folk-related Vintersorg era. If you are into the kind of stuff you see on the later Borknagar albums, I'd say pick up Cosmic Genesis.

If you really like the folk, pick up Sagovindars Boning by Otyg, his first band.

i concur with every oen who said to go for cosmic genesis, my favorite i have heard from him.

in regard to the person who said he has all but taken over Borknagar, i don't know that i would agree with you. (im assumeing here that EPIC was there most recent album) I think there are some deffinite similarities but it seems more of a smooth mixture rather than Borknagar sounding like Vintersorj.
