Somewhat inspired by Husker's Darkthrone question: which 5 recordings do you most enjoy listening to from the early/mid 90s Norwegian sound? Not talking influence, not talking genre importance, just which 5 would you actually most want to listen to, today?

Bergatt-Ulver
In The Nightside Eclipse-Emperor

gap

Hyis lyset tar oss-Burzum
Vikingligr Veldi-Enslaved
Nemesis Divina-Satyricon (reviews over on metal-archives changed my selection from Dark Medieval Times to this)

Yeah, I left a bunch of favorites off this list, but only 5 can make the cut.

Emperor- In The Nightside Eclipse
Mayhem- De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Emperor- Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Darkthrone- A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Gorgoroth- Pentagram

tough choices, had to leave out some records I really enjoy.

I disagree, it's a little too easy. The second wave is pretty confined.

Anyway:
Satyricon - The Shadowthrone
Emperor - In The Nightside...
Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Carpathian Forest - Bloodlust and Perversion

There aren't many bands to choose from but the difficulty is in which release to pick.

True. Felt bad leaving Burzum off the list.
Ulver's Nattens Madrigal is another one.

It would be interesting to see what the top ten or so post second wave black metal bands list would look like, but I'm too fucking lazy to create a thread

Hmmm...

Burzum - Filosofem (recorded in the time period requested even if not quite released in it, so going to cheat and include this...)
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

Cruel question! Burzum is too good to be left out and more enjoyable to listen to, for me, than Gorgoroth whoever. I think I'd have included Bergtatt if I wasn't a little burnt out on it, and Enslaved's early run is too good to be limited to just one album. Those Emperor, Mayhem and Darkthrone albums stand up with time and many, many listens. Interesting no-one picked Immortal, guess early Immortal isn't as close to people's hearts as their later material...?

Five huh? Tough call but let's see what I can come up with
Ulver - Bergtatt
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter
Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfornia

Hmm this has given me an idea...

Excellent choice on the Arcturus! That's a great album.

Immortal completely escaped my mind for some reason even though I was just listening to them a lot the past few days.

I might put Diabolical Fullmoon or Pure Holocaust ahead of Gorgoroth- Pentagram now that I think of it....

Well since I'm not big on Burzum or Gorgoroth I guess it left me room for a couple albums that hadn't come up yet.

Darkthrone - Blaze in the Northern Sky (Panzerfaust is a close second.)
Emperor - IX Equilibrium (Not as essential as others, but I just like this one the most.)
Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi (Close call between this and Eld.)
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter (The apex of their powers. Latter period Immortal is just better.)
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal (Bergtatt is probably a superior record, but the production on Nattens is as bitter cold as anything I've yet to hear.)

Burzum - Filosofem is my honorable mention.

Come November these will be all I am listening to.

Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Ulver - Bergtatt
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal
Mayhem - Live in Leipzig
Limbonic Art - Moon in the Scorpio (sneaking that in, I think it was 97 so a little past mid 90s)

Just curious, but why November, and why only the forementioned?

I don't love listening to black metal in the summer. It's weird listening to In My Kingdom Cold when it is ninety degrees outside and I got a box fan blowing on me and my cat so that we don't die/melt. I'll probably be listening to more than just these. Was a tad hyperbolic. That being said in terms of this era, these are about all I get into. I like other Emperor, Limbonic Art, Ulver (Kveldssanger, in particular), and Mayhem albums, but they fall outside of the time period in question. I'm more into later Immortal, like Damned in Black or Sons of Northern Darkness. Satyricon and Darkthrone don't do much for me. The dudes from Darkthrone seem real cool, but just can't get into their music enough to really love it.

I also just like to sync my music listening up to the season; a lot of Type O and White Zombie in October. Black metal and noise all winter. Transition through spring with the cheery black metal like Petrychor, Botanist, or Skagos. Summer time comes, though, all hair metal all the time.

Strange, black metal is year round for me and I rarely listen to the old guard anymore (once in a moon, but I've heard most of it enough times already to last me awhile) and mainly focus my attention on stuff like Cultes Des Ghoules, Evilfeast, Doombringer, Myrkr, etc... mostly current black metal done the old way.
Black metal is definitely well suited for fall and winter, though.

Pure Holocaust would be in my top 10.

Trapt: I'm fine with you including Moon in the Scorpio, right on the edge timewise, but I think it counts as one of the last from the period and certainly has fitting production.

RO, At the Heart of Winter, while good, is a Tagtren production from the late 90s, really have a hard time seeing that as qualifying for this question.

Looks like only cotb and I gave a nod to Satyricon. Too bad, all three of their first albums would be in a top 15 of this poll.

It's the downside to me basically listening to the same stuff from 2004 to 2011. That's the earliest Immortal album I own. Maybe it's outside the narrow focus here but I'm not the only person who put it in their list.

Totally get the seasonal listening, tend to transition out of black metal into death metal towards the end of winter / start of spring myself.

Wait. Myrkr like the lady vocals band? Serious question. Or are there two Myrkr?

The more I think about this, the more I realize that I prefer Panopticon's Darkthrone worship to actual Darkthrone albums. It's like the relation between pumpkin spice and actual pumpkin.
