Venom and Bathory are both first tier bands, but Bathory are probably slightly more influential on bm as a whole from the raw production, riffs, to the vocals. Venom undoubtedly influenced Quorthon though, and if one truly wanted to argue one can go the route of saying Venom influenced Bathory and gave birth to bm indirectly. Venom have been credited as an influence on bands from across the spectrum from thrash to death metal to hardcore, and Bathory more or less created Viking metal and either one are indispensable influences to extreme metal. I'm going with Bathory due to the sheer amount of classics in comparison to Venom. The first three Venom are probably superior to the first Three Bathory, but when you add Blood, fire, death, Hammerheart, and Twilight of the gods Bathory's prime material outweighs Venom. Venom also never really relived the sheer power of their first three- their latter material pales in comparison to the Nordland saga albums by Quorthon and the band themselves seem content to rest on their laurels. Quorthon's work as a whole is creatively superior, more memorable as a whole, and has lasted longer to me than Black metal, Welcome to hell, or At war with Satan |

My choice was more out of personal preference than anything else. Bathory's career output is definitely superior in terms of quality, but I enjoy listening to Venom a whole lot more. |

Blood Fire Death should make this a landslide. |

Venom since the nineties has been underwhelming |

Nickelback666 wrote: Venom since the nineties has been underwhelming The Dolan era line-up produced some pretty good stuff, especially Temples of Ice. Lacks the dirty, more-evil-than-thou charm of the classic material but was still a fun, rip-roaring thrash beast with plenty of energy to spare. |

You only really need Venom's first three albums. With Bathory there are some lowlights but most of their work is top notch. I enjoy Bathory more as well so it's a no-brainer. |

Venom is just good, brainless fun. Pound some Jager shots and get in the fucking pit sort of shit. They've got that blunt force punk rock simplicity to their songs that I just love. |

Jager is perfect mosh juice. Not meant to be enjoyed, merely fuel for aggression. |
