Okay, I had to bring this hotly debated topic up eventually. What is the general consensus here about the black album?

For me it's a miss. Six or seven good songs (Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Wherever I May Roam, to a small extent Nothing Else Matters, Of Wolf And Man, God That Failed and Struggle Within). The rest is either filler or garbage. And for the record, I think Load and ReLoad were better albums (I'll bet nobody ever bothered to think of that possibility, did they?).

Miss. Enter Sandman is overplayed to the point that I have memorized the opening drumbeats, and pretty much the whole rest of the CD is either wimpy 'hard rock' or wimpy ballads.

Miss. It has some enjoyable songs but overall it's just nothing to get too excited about.

Miss, what a piece of crap. A few good songs on it though, such as Through the Never. Sad But True= One of the shittiest songs I've ever heard.

Miss, the mood of the album is weird, i think... and i don't like most of the songs and never has. I got introduced to the band when i was 10 years old. Even back then, I liked the older shit a houndred times more ... and for good reasons

hit

not because it's a good album but because it converted so many mainstream-asses to devoted metalheads...

otherwise, I agree it's quite average and certainly worse than Load & Reload... St Anger remaining the übershite by this overall very fine band...

killer songs : Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Holier Than Thou, Unforgiven

Hit, it had more variety, quality and quantity than most of their other albums. I take it over MOP and AJFO any time. Sure most songs weren't too fast, but I usually enjoy a good mix of speed not an album of non stop speed.

Another thing: Unforgiven = The Most Overrated Metallica Song Ever. Seriously, I never had any idea why that song became so popular. Irritating solo, annoying forced verses, and an all around feeling that Metallica was trying to be emotional just for the sake of being emotional. At least Nothing Else Matters had some nice accoustic melodies.

Then again, it is a ballad. And something I've noticed in the metal community is that, even though metal fans often like their music "hard and aggressive", it's often the ballad(s) on a metal album that get the most praise and fanfare. Talk about irony.

And what is your reason? I personnaly like the fact that at least St. Anger had some pissed off-ness to it.

Yeah, the black album just lacks the fury of old Metallica. St. Anger, while not really a good album as a whole, has more attitude.

Drop-tuned riffs = nu-metal??? Whatever...

But i can see where you're coming from. I'm by no means a fan of St. Anger. The album sounds like they were desperately trying to update their sound and make it more "current", But it's still a helluva lot more angry and raw than the wimpy black album.

Definite hit! This album is probably the greatest "mainstream metal" album I've ever heard. There is barely a weak song on it, IMO. Then again, it was the first metal album I ever listened to so perhaps I'm blinded by nostalgia. But Sad but True, Unforgiven, Wherever, Don't tread on me, Through the Never, Nothing else matters, God that failed, My friend of misery.... These are all great songs!

this was the album that got me into metal in the first place, especially enter sandman, but looking back, its mediocre,
Master, kill em all, lightning ,justice , wow,

st-anger, not wow
but i still dont get why ppl say they sold out, everyone hates that album , if they sold out people would like it, selling out
is when you play what people wanna hear instead of what you wanna play, they played what they wanted and got flamed senseless,
i think they still deserve some respect, specially since they did afterall write 4 solid master peices

ironically enough the true sence of selling out would be if they did something like master of puppets 2 ( even if they didnt want to) and everyone would of praised it

ka-pish

now excuse me while i go put on still life and bitch about how ghost reveries isnt still life 2

Miss. Just like the Scorpions and Priest before them, they sold out for the new decade, and it resulted in their lamest material yet.
