imo, they're the finest blend of extreme avant-garde metal but you have every right to disagree...

Hit, of the three albums I've heard, I've loved two. Neonism just didn't stick with me at all, but the Linear Scaffold and In Harmonia were great.

Well, Linear Scaffold, their first album, is awesome. It's a little harsher and more straightforward than the other stuff, but not exactly a dark funeral album. Pretty consistent, well-written, and the numerous elements (the different vocal styles, instruments, keys, etc. used throughout) are well-balanced.

The other one I really enjoyed was the newest one, In Harmonia Universali. No more shrieking vocals, and less focus on black metal, but it's still there among other things. Far longer and more conviluted than the first, whereas Linear Scaffold was energetic this one tends to plod at times. Still, despite it's flaws there are some really excellent moments, and it's a bit less typical than Linear Scaffold. Even though it isn't as concise, when it's at its best this one probably has my favorite material.

Either way, both albums have their fair collection of great melodies and riffs.

as I consider Solefald to be the very best avant-garde band, you'll easily understand that I fully agree... do check out their other releases... do check out Fleurety too ! :D

The Trees Are Dead And Dried Out was an amazing album in which I could hear the combined influences of Faith No More, Mr Bungle, Refused & Glassjaw... since I really like those bands, I was quite impressed... still, they're a young band so you never know but I'm expecting great things from their 2006 release...

definitely a band to check out too (as are all the bands I mentioned as influences)... :D

NP
Jack Johnson "On and On" (good chill out acoustic folk pop from former surfer Jack Johnson... almost beachy !)

The new one, Red for Fire, I'd say is their best yet. I got it kind of late but I've been listening to it like crazy since and it's possibly my favorite album of 2005. Much more concise and uniformly powerful than the last, but with vision and range that they didn't quite have before (that probably sounded like a cut and paste, but it's true I swear! ). Solefald has jumped up and taken the top Avant Garde metal spot for me, in the absence of Arcturus. I can't wait for Black for Death.

I heard a good song the other day, where have all the women gone, or something, off their mid-period stuff. I need to find something by these people ( a duo, no?)...
