For this week's "Hit Or Miss" poll, we discuss one of the most controversial bands in the entire heavy metal scene: Machine Head. As for my opinions, the only albums of theirs that I really like are Burn My Eyes and The More Things Change. Through The Ashes Of Empires was dull and boring for the most part, Supercharger was crap from what I heard, and The Burning Red had a couple good songs. I'm voting "Hit" albeit a very weak "Hit."

Miss, I'm afraid. They have a few good songs, but not more than I count on one hand. I'd have to be a fricken' centipede to count all their bad songs..

their first album was okay, their second is complete nu-shite but their latest happen to be their finest work to date... just give a try to "Through the Ashes of Empires", imo this band is now aiming the right way...

Burn My Eyes had 2 or 3 songs that truly kicked ass (many will probably name DAVIDIAN).

the more things change, though, SUCKED ASS! what a piece of shit album. i can't believe i actually spent money on it. they try to do "slow and heavy" but Pantera did the groove thing (i usually hate the slow stuff, but i love Pantera..) 100 times better than them. MH truly suck at it. long boring-ass intros, and when a song has a fast kick ass thrashing part it lasts like 10 seconds and has a 10 minute intro. fuck that.


Burning Red, honestly, had some good songs imo. then again i don't mind the mix of rap (in moderate amounts) and metal that much...

Supercharger i didn't hear, nor did i hear Empires, although i will check it out.

their cover of "Battery" is pretty sweet...

apparently they're strong live too, and do a nice cover medley, metallica, iron maiden, slayer, sepultura...

Got TTAOE as my first MH album, and loved it, then got BME and it just seemed a bit crap compared to their latest. The rest is shit, but as Stefan said they seem to be on the right path, so its a HIT.

WTF? Are you people on crack? Burn My Eyes is a fucking classic metal CD! It's fucking crushing!! When it came out it was instantly hailed as one of the greatest metal CDs ever recorded! The More Things Change was an awesome follow-up, so fucking good!

The Burning Red was the "different" album. They tried a few new things, like the so-called "rap vocals"—which wasn't actually rapping, by the way—and a more current sound, which did include some nu-metal similarities. On the whole, though, I think The Burning Red is a great album with some excellent songs. It is very different, though, from the previous two.

Supercharger is easily their weakest. There are some great songs on the album, but there is also too much filler. I think it's heavier than The Burning Red and has more of the "traditional metal" sound, but a good portion of the songs just aren't all that good, rather mediocre.

Now, Through The Ashes Of Empire is a return to form! Any band that ever says they're going back to their "classic" sound is usually either lying or completely delusional (see Metallica and their horrendous St. Anger album). With Machine Head, though, they shocked me and most others, they actually DID go back to their classic sound and with amazing success, if you ask me! Through The Ashes Of Empires, for me, is their best CD aside from Burn My Eyes! It is heavy, it grooves, it's catchy! It's got everything you need in a killer album! Those who disagree are probably fans of St. Anger! Hehehehe.

3. The More Things Change
4. The Burning Red
5. Supercharger

Doesn't matter, in 1994 critics and fans across the board declared it so. And they were correct, the album is a classic! You may have been 10 in 1994, I don't know. Maybe that's why you don't think it's that good! =)


Experimenting is called being a true musician, that doesn't mean they sold out. A band like Sugar Ray who was a heavy band before having a huge hit with an acoustic song and then turning into an acoustic band is selling out.

I don't care what critics say, Burn My Eyes is a lousy album besides ONE song (Davidian) and about HALF of another song (Old). Fuck critics, they gave good reviews to Britney Spears.

And I was actually 11 in 1994. What's your point? I was -13 in 1970 and I know Black Sabbath is a classic album.

The thing is that you would normally trust the opinions of the metal press over the opinions of the mainstream. And the metal press in particular (to this day) hails Burn My Eyes as a classic. Even MetalReviews (who really needs to write a review for that album). The critics and fans who lauded Burn My Eyes certainly weren't the same ones that lauded Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears.

Somehow I wonder if the album's influence on the nu-metal scene has a lot to do with why some people have a problem with it. You listen to it for the first time today and right away you can see where this influenced the whole nu-metal scene. Much like listening to Pantera for the first time today.

i think Seinfeld is right on this... i'm not saying people should start loving it but i think you could give them a break....

btw, there's a thin line between "progressing and experimenting and evolving" and "selling out" and there's no point in discussing it because you'll lever be able to draw a single conclusion from it aside from the fact that it's pointless.
