So recently I've been getting into Portal and StarGazer and I'm really liking what I hear.
Are there any other impressive death metal bands from Australia that I should look into?

Well, there is Destroyer 666 which are Black/Death/Thrash metal. Very well made extreme metal that about 5-6 years ago I became an instant fan of them. There is also Nazxul which are symphonic Black Metal. I wasn't too fond of their music as they apply a lot of blast beats and not enough change and well-thought out structure in their sound but nonetheless you might find them shall we say... Interesting! Not exactly what you were looking for but I think it's close enough.

Btw, if you like Portal, you could check out Impetuous Ritual, they share a couple of members. It's insane death metal, somewhat similar to Portal as expected.

It's funny. I'm Australian and generally can't stand Australian metal. Most of them sound amateurish when compared to overseas stuff.

It's just a lack of interest in what's coming out of the US in terms of "death" or "thrash" metal these days. I think I only listen to sludge and stoner stuff from the US now.

But I will admit that a lot of the stuff from Australia sounds unprofessional, but I like my metal raw, so I'm enjoying it.

Out of curiosity, was Wilcock still working with Berzerker when he was in Akercocke, or did he just flat out leave?

Left. I think. Fucking MA took the years which the person played for the band off the info?

I'd have assumed he left too, since he did tour with the 'Cocke and everything. Still, considering The Berzerker is basically Luke Kenny plugging his guitar into a laptop, it's not unreasonable to suggest Matt could have emailed a riff or three over.

Speaking of Akercocke, although they're playing small gigs here and there Jason's busy with his young family. Apparently Matt and David have started a new project, The Antichrist Imperium, which doesn't sound good for the band, but according to Digby Pearson (*pinch of salt*) they've not split up.

That really sucks but if they have announced a splitup outright, then who knows about newer material. I'm really hoping they can release one more album under the Akercocke banner, their last two were stellar

Indeed, it would be a shame if they couldn't put out at least one more album...thanks for the update, Zad.

The bassist is in Order of Apollyon and that kinda blows.
