As you all know, I rarely rave about a band belonging to the "extreme metal" section... Once in a while, an album comes out of nowhere (usually because a friend advised me about it) and blows my mind. It recently happened to me with Ascension's debut album, Consolamentum. It's a german BM band formed in 2007. I loved the how the doomy parts worked with the rest, the super-melodic lead guitars and even the vocals! So, listen to Consolamentum and tell me if you know any other album of its kind. Thanks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4msNeZyUmto http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMqXmalk40s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBpKVac0DJU |

Legacy mentioned DsO in reference to them and that's my first thought. Rebellion Flesh reminds me of the newest Watain in some ways. Hmmm don't have an expansive knowledge of who sounds like a riffier DsO. |

I guess we'll have to wait for the "experts" to tell us... Anyone? ![]() |

Anyone? ![]() Referring to a person's expertise paranthetically isn't exactly the most tactful way of going about asking for rec's now, is it? Just saying, is all. |

Yeah, you're probably right. Not what I meant. |

Not what I meant. it's cool... obviously Watain, Ondskapt come to mind. Try Svartsyn (SWE), as well. there are others, and I will sort through my collection when I have the chance tonight and see what else I can find that may satisfy your query, but I am on the way out right now. To be honest, I don't usually dig this style of BM, ergo I'm probably not the best person to give recs for this particular style of BM, though there are a few that are quite good. |

Also, even though they sound nothing like Ascension, check out Inquisition, if you haven't already. |

Good stuff, Stefan, thank you. I might recommend Katharsis themselves, particularly their 2006 World Without End. It is a bit more traditional, but they always know how to write good riffs. |

To get back to this thread, I really can't think of much more to add... maybe try some of the Finnish bands, like Behexen, Horna, etc. |

In that case you're missing out on some great black metal. |

No doubt I've been missing a lot of great BM since I'm rarely in the mood for this kind of music. Have you heard Ascension, Milan? |

Check out Fran Marder (a good place to start), if you are so inclined. Very well done BM, done in the old way but not overly raw. |

Have you heard Ascension, Milan? Not yet, mostly due to the fact that I barely listen to any music during this time of year (fucking exams!). But since om not studying at the moment I'll give em a listen right now. |

I'm not too keen on the vocals, but that may change given time. Grey Light Sibling definitely has some great riffing going on and Consolamentum does remind me of Arckanum a little bit, definitely his last two albums (which are great too by the way). Overall I'd say they're one of the more interesting black metal bands I've heard recently. Thanks for the recommendation! |
