Post subject:  What have I missed?

Judging from my playlist from last night (Mgla, Argharus, Woods of Infinity, Shining) my appreciation for Blek Metle is returning, and I want to catch up on all the great stuff that I've not heard whilst off in the sunlight, dancing with the prog and power metal crew. So, what have I missed?

I do intend to go through Rio's recent reviews and try out this big strange world of lefty black metal, so perhaps recommendations outside of that would be better. Feel free to mention if any of those are especially worth trying, though.

Try out the new Vintersorg.

I've rediscovered albums I haven't listened too since high school, black metal albums like Genevieve, Ritual, and Walpurgisnacht by Varathron. So maybe you should redive into your older albums. As for newer bands Lantlos, Necros Christos, and Wolf are some of the new blood I've enjoyed recently.

Ascension's Consolamentum is a good album. Reminded me of DsO.
Also, Dornenreich have released a new album, Flammentriebe. I'm not sure they qualify as BM anymore though...

Wolves In The Throne Room - Black Cascade
Melechesh - The Epigenesis
Destroyer 666 - Defiance
Moonsorrow - Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa
Absu – The Sun of Tipareth
Mayhem – Chimera
Rotting Christ - Sanctus Diavolos
Negura Bunget - Om and also: N Vrugu Bradului

These have been on my playlist anyway. It’s a great idea as Steve said to dig through your older records and see what you have missed. I would have said Satyricon - Nemesis Divina too, but I haven't that in a very long time but it's on my playlist to be heard. Old Enslaved is always welcome :)

Edit: And from what I'm hearing from Nemsis Divina you should definitely check out again. What an atmosphere; everything sounds great.

Dunno if you heard the last Agalloch, it's great. I also don't know why it isn't reviewed here... DON'T BE FUCKING LAZY! (directed at the one who's supposed to review the album). Marrow of the Spirit was in the top ten of many sites.

How could I ever forget Agalloch! Maybe because I was expecting The Mantle Part II but it never happened; although it does have some brilliant and some very good moments, to say the least. It's a mixture of Post-rock-BM or whatever you please to call it. I must say, it's a very Ambitious effort by Agalloch.

Imho, MotS is the best Agalloch ever. But I'm a little biased because I'm into this "cascadian" scene, and the new album sounds a bit like that, but better.

I can most definitely see where you're coming from. You see, I haven't given Marrow of The Spirit enough spins yet. As I have mentioned before, I found it to be somewhat disappointing. But after a couple of nights ago listening to a track from it, it all came together... after all I am a massive Agalloch fan. I pretty much love whatever they have done. The album is layered with guitars, ambiance and the Cello which I love. In fact, I have added MotS to my current playlist. I'm sure I will find a new love for it. BTW, what's your favourite Satyricon album? I am currently listening to Nemesis Divina and The Shadowthrone but have sold Dark Medieval Times. Listening to a track from DMT I find to be a bit poor in structure, although ND is much better for that matter.

Nemesis Divina is my favorite, they improved everything on that album. THIS IS... ARMAGEDDON!!! What a fuckin' soundblast that intro is. Beautiful and destructive.

They died for me after NM. Sadly, I haven't been able to get into post NM stuff. DMT (isn't that a powerful drug of the Amazonia :P ) is a bit overrated because it sounds kvlt and primitive, but it's not that good. Solid album nevertheless.

In terms of 2011, new Petrychor is great, deafheaven less so, new Shining is only decent and I don't think you like Krallice. That's all I got for 2011. Oh and the Welkin Dusk demo from last year was great.

I listened carefully to Krallice and I still don't know what's so great about them. Doesn't even sound like BM to me. Using tremolo doesn't make you BM. And visually they suck too; just saw a live video (probably a bootleg) on youtube, and they look like a bunch of fuckin' junkies. I've seen beggars and vagabonds with a better look.

That's fine.

And Hour of Penance is death metal. And I think Zad reviewed the last Cobalt.

ha! I haven't done any psychedelic drugs in a long time. I find Dark Medieval Times very immature and weak sounding. I still have to re-listen to The Shadowthrone because it's been such a long time since I have listened to that album. Yeah... I never really got into new era Satyricon, whatsoever. I only have Rebel Extravaganza because I thought it was a decent at the time.

Steve mentioned them. A review in MA says that they are an "Esoteric Death Metal band with a BM spirit". I'm interested... :omfg:

I like what I'm hearing so far from this band. Nothing groundbreaking but definitely original.

Triune Impurity Rites is a great album. I haven't heard Doom of the Occult but I expect to be good as well. They're not an easy band to get into so be prepared and willing to spend a lot of time with it.
