As the worst death metal band thread garnered significant momentum to stretch a few pages, what are some black metal bands that push the level of musical horror to extremes even unrealized in the genre? What aspects of their sound make them near unlistenable, and if they are in a side project or well-known act, how do they influence that band in any way? My first comment has to go to Zarach Baal, I have never heard such atrocious bm in my entire life until I heard the countless demos he's spawned.

I tend to skip bullshit black metal bands immediately upon first listen so I don't remember any names. There are a lot of them.

I've heard a lot of bm that was shithouse but it's all blurred together and I never took notice of it. Mostly Darkthrone clones that rely on 1-2 terrible riffs per song.

I did listen to In Sorte Diaboli from start to finish a couple of times, which was horrific. I used to have a free demo I downloaded from this terrible Emperor clone too, can't remember their name at the moment though. It was horrible.

Mayhem.

Seriously, if they left out all the murders, arson and general tomwankery and concentrated on their music, they might have a back catalogue that's more impressive than two great albums, two great EPs, and a bunch of yawn that ranges from 'fun if you're in the mood' to 'for Huskers only'.
Twenty-six years, four releases actually worth spending money on. Great job, guys, well shitting done.

Bullshit.

The only album by Mayhem that isn't that good is Ordo Ad Chao and it still has it's moments and is a decent album.

Deathcrush is solid, DMDS is the shit, Wolf's Lair Abyss is awesome, Grand Declaration of War is fucking cool and Chimera is awesome.
Hellhammers drumming on Chimera is realllly cool.

I love all kinds of music though. Even American Pop music.

*First sends good karma Goat's way for saying Mayhem*

Goat, Which two albums do you consider great?

I agree with you both on the eps (Wolf's Lair Abyss, is, for my money the best thing they ever did) but I can't agree with Husker on Grand Declaration at all. And while DMDS has some great tracks it also has a bunch of boring ones. Chimera was pretty good, Ordo Ad Chaos was rather boring.

De Mysteriis and Ordo Ad Chao are my picks for greatness. Chimera and GDoW are decent, but I really have to be in the mood as they can both very easily slip into dullness.

And @ Husker, five good releases in twenty-six years is hardly an improvement!

The world would certainly be no worse off without the catalogs of Naglfar and Dark Funeral (excepting their debuts, I suppose).

I'm gonna get skewered for this. But 98% of black metal is garbage.

Dark Funeral or Mayhem. I guess I can't think of any really horrible obscure bm bands off the top of my head.

Anyways, there's a bunch of terribly obscure bands I've heard that I would never want to listen to again.

Boo on you HolyTerror. It's good though, I get panned all the time on here for messing with stuff in my reviews. Like the time I took a linguistic poop on The Beatles. As far as the worst BM ever is concerned.

Mexican Depressive BM solo effort Drown in Solitude.

Literally, sounds like the dude abducted an elephant from the Zoo and put it on vocals. I lost a mouthful of beer when this guy opened his vocals.
