War metal is often seen as the melding of thrash, black, and death, and when played well offers a unique and powerful sound. Bands such as Abominator and Bestial warlust combine the atmosphere of black metal chords with the ferocity of death and thrash, but when done poorly sounds like a mess of "cult" inspired nonsense such as Goatpenis and Conqueror. I'm curious to know everyones thoughts on the subgenre, if it's a subgenre it anyone's eyes at all, do you think of it as just a worthless offshoot of death metal, or do you find some bands to be representative it to a certain degree.

Yeah. I gave up long ago and decided it was all Thrash, myself.

I'd always just thought of this as Death-Black.

The real war metal is Cobalt and Loits!

Bolt Thrower is awesome but can't top the intensity of Cobalt and as for the Tool comparisons, War Metal and Eater of Birds don't really have that vibe.

I thought you of all the posters would know it, it's basically black/thrash like everyone stated inspired by bands like Destroyer 666 and Archgoat. I don't think you'll enjoy it much considering black metal is abrasive enough, but if you are interested in something a little more high voltage check out bands like Bestial Warlust and Abominator.

I honestly was unaware such a genre even existed.
Still, Bolt Thrower is awesome.
I have som Bestial warlust, but not the others.
I've heard Destroyer 666, though.

Bolt Thrower is the epitome of solid. I always feel satisfied after listening to them.

Wow. I had no idea not everyone knew about Bolt Thrower. Definitely a good reference in this thread. You guys should check the reviews on this site. They're all good.

I thought War Metal is the same thing as Battle Metal aka Viking Metal.

No sir, War metal is an intense fusion of black/thrash/death, and Battle metal is synth laden happy riffing AKA queer bands like Turisas.
