Only album I own is Ordo Ad Chao. I've had it for a few years but have never given it my undivided attention. I can say with absolute certainty that it doesn't make for good driving music

Deathcrush is awesome from what i've heard but De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas still bores the hell out of me. I just have a hard time getting into Attila's vocals.

Pure fucking armageddon and Deathcrush have more vitriol and power than any of the bands they've influenced. Mayhem are and always will be remembered as one of the most important acts of the second wave, and De mysteriis dom Sathanas though arguably their most important contribution to metal, is just one of their better studio moments. Whenever I listen to Carnage and Chainsaw Gutsfuck, it's an immediate jumpstart to rabidly headbanging..

For all their vitriol and power, Old Mayhem is just ok musically. DMDS holds up horribly against either Bergtatt or Nightside Eclipse. Wolf's Lair was a very nice ep, and all newer Mayhem is enjoyable to an extent, but even their influence is overrated. Burzum and Darkthrone spawned the legions of imitators, Emperor had a massive influence on a smaller but still significant group of bands, even Enslaved highly thought of later output has made it more influential than Mayhem. That said, I'm glad Mayhem made and continue to makes music, and their catalyst influence on Darkthrone, Immortal, Enslaved, Emperor and others (as well as something newer like Watain) can't be diminished.

Live In Leipzig is probably the best live black metal album, if only for Dead's contribution.

I love 'em. Csihar is a mindblowing vocalist and deserves every plaudit he gets. Relistened to GDOW the other day and even though it's arguably not a good album, it's still an interesting listen.

My thoughts exactly. DMDS was one of the first bm albums I bought and I rarely rarely return to listen to it. Stuff like Wolf's Lair, Grand Declaration, Chimera and Ordo make me interested for a few tracks but I really don't sit through them entirely. They're just not that great. It's all good it just doesn't click like other bands from that time have.

Yeah I even think Chimera is a really good album. That used to get me flamed but seems I'm among friends now.

I really dug it for a few months when I listened to CDs in my car. Haven't checked it out in a while.

I really want to put it on now but I think the CD is stashed away somewhere at my folks' house in my teenage-years bedroom.

Hah, I don't have such a problem! My cds are all stashed in my teenage-years bedroom where I am currently!! Such an advantage.

Maniac does the same vocals I would do. I feel his vocals a lot.

Pagan Fears and Freezing Moon are my favorite songs on DMDS.

Fail. Maniac's vocals are generally frowned upon.

Because 'generally' equals 'truth'?

I like how he couldn't be bothered screeching on most of GDOW, and did that hammy dramatic spoken thing instead. He's good in Skitliv, but generally Csihar >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Maniac.

Plus:

"Hmm, what shall we call you, new Mayhem woacalist?"
"What about Maniac, because he is a fockin' maniac!"

But he's solid on Wolf Lair's Abyss.
