Post subject:  Beautiful Brutal Death Metal

One of my favorite forms of death comes in the form of brutal yet heartfelt arrangments. Where as some death is just a heavy brutal slab of melody bereft heft and the expected been-there-done-that melodies of melodic death metal tend to be soft and generic, lacking any real care and emotion. This has led me to really appreciate that slim field of musicians who ply their chosen craft with care, whose discographies stand true to their convictions and love of death metal.

So, I was curious as to how my fellow metalheads feel in relation to these bands and their music. Does it actually affect you, move you? I know it does me, sometimes to the brink of tears or sometimes sending me off on a thoughtful observation or recollection of all facets of life. What really stands out about these bands is their ability to keep it brutal yet interject some melody and harmony while keeping the music firmly rooted in death metal.

Some of the bands and sounds I mean being Anata and their UASWNI & The Conductor's Departure, Benighted's song Grind Wit off of Icon. Other examples include one of my favorites, Sceptic. Their albums Pathetic Being and Unbeliever's Script are excellent examples of stellar but refined musicianship coupled with heartfelt and meaningful songwriting. Controlled By Mind and Voices From The Past are incredible songs that get me every time. I've recently discovered the Polish band Angerpath that adheres to this with Forgotten World, being a primarily slow paced cd with faint doom elements, the songwriting is touching and moving but not outright melodic. Other good examples are Capharnum, Martyr, Gorod, Neuraxis, Demonoid and Faust.

In conclusion are you in my boat? Do you enjoy this particular craft? Was this indeed too winded and delussional? Do you have any bands that you would like to add to this list and/or share?

Erk. Death Metal that is emotional as opposed to...? Can I have some examples of bands that are the opposite of what you say, because I'm not sure I get it. In Flames seem to fit your description well.

I guess I'm meaning bands that aren't billed as melodic death due to their lack of melody in the majority of the songs. In Flames is a good band, but to typical in that have those pretty choruses and verses. Even Mors Principium Est doesn't work due to sharing the same style of songwriting. Bands like Sceptic have songs with different structures and moments of harmony, and Anata and Benighted's use of beautiful hammer-ons is fairly unique and pretty without sounding at all like a normal MDM band.

I can see how I screwed up, emotional can be anything so I'll change it.

Arsis is a toughy because it is both technical, brutal and melodic which is along the same lines but is not included because I already know about them and the melody is too prevalent especially in the new album. Death's albums kick tons of ass and The Sound of Perseverance is a highlight of mine. I love how Sceptic and Faust are an evolution to that sound to some degree. Like, you know its death metal but it isn't like the Gothenburg sound. Arch Enemy is close but too predictable and not melancholy enough, while Edge of Sanity is amazing its not what I'm looking for. No clean vocals and the riffs need to be more harmonic and strange.

Oppostie list: Dark Tranquillity, Mors Principium Est, Soilwork, Omnium Gatherum, anything Gothenburg for that matter.

The U.K.'s Aghast is a good band, mixing that brutality with only a few moments of beauty, but when it hits its so much more moving imo.Oh, and I don't care if its one song, if it fits the bill then feel free to add it.

There are a lot of bands that I can think of that fit this style, but for the most part when you say "brutal" you limit the word to the subgenre IMO. For the most part some bands that can combine intensity with beautiful melodies I guess you could say are Decrepit Birth, Kataklysm, and Ulcerate. But for brutal death metal most bands don't care to introduce melody as the fanbase cares only for shitty slams and gay misogynistic lyrics.

Wormed? Pestilence? The definition of beauty is a bit fast and loose...

Usually I just want something badass when I listen to death metal. The only band that gives me beautiful music chills playing DM is Arsis. I don't listen to any brutal death metal though because it all sounds like a vacuum cleaner after ten minutes.

Haha some good bands mentioned. And just beauty as in Death styled death metal, that and I changed the name from Emotional Death Metal cause it seemed too open. I chose beautiful cause I wanted to change it before leaving the house for a few hours. Anyway yeah that death metal sound with "pretty" parts in it, be it solos, soft passages or whatever. Most recommendations were good though. I was also interested in what people thought of Sceptic and Anata, but was uber excited and just blurted out a goofy thread. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'd love to find more bands like them but they are actually unique in what they do. Ah well.

I sincerely apologize on behalf of my laziness. I would edit it but alas, I can no longer change it. I wonder all of a sudden, if primitive man was so chastised for his grammar in early caveman days? That must've been funny, "iT NO Uugghh!!! iT Uuggh!! YoU gEt rIgHt oR I fEeD fAcE tO ReX!!" C'est la vie.......

Dechristianize comes to mind here. So brutal and then turns into such a beautiful sweeping part.

Skrot is right on the money with that one. I still love all of Vital's albums. Pyscroptic's Initiate is a really great example of a moody song that I love, I'm still suprised they'd make of video of it since its so long, but I love it. Sorry for the crappy quote Evil Dead, I was going to post a funny picture but alas, I fail at posting pictures on this board, and only this one lol.
