The likes of Nemesis Divina, Dark Medieval Times and The Shadowthrone rule supreme.

I used to hate it, not least for Black Lava going on for like twenty freaking minutes, but I've come around after getting into Now Diabolical and Commando Stones In The Water The Age Of Nero. Not heard any of them for a while, actually.

The new songs slay in live situations.

I just love what they have going on here, and what they've been doing since. While Now, Diabolical was their weakest effort, IMO, The Age of Nero was a great redeemer.

I'm a big fan of this kinda black metal, the kind with a rock n roll kick in the ass. Vreid's I Krig reminds me of this style, as well.

True. When did you see them? When I saw them recently they held out Mother North until a second encore and lots of the crowd chanting for it.

I think the only BM vocalist I'd put against of Satyr is Abbath... Then again I'm probably forgetting several vocalists.

Just a summary of my opinion, although I did quite enjoy Now, Diabolical. Isn't Darkthrone playing this style now though, although ND is very different from The Cult is Alive.

My favorite album by the band, if there's any fans here, what are your thoughts? Is it not grim enough for you? Too much of a change? Honestly I think it's their best effort and I absolutely love the style they had going on this album. There's just plenty of great tracks to rock out to on this album. I realize that may not be very kvlt, but it's the truth. Possessed, Fuel For Hatred, Suffering the Tyrants, Black Lava... Shit, man. I think they're all good. I was fishing through reviews on good ol' MR, and saw this received a ridiculous 64/100. This is truly a great album, even if you're butthurt about Satyricon changing it up. Easily a 90/100 in my book.

i pretty much just listen to it for Fuel for Hatred, I can remember trying really hard to listening to it on my way back from Flagstaff a looong time ago but Satyr's voice ruined it

There are certainly better... Frost is a better drummer than Satyr is a vocalist, for sure. And yes, Fuel For Hatred's initial riff does tend to go off in my head like an air raid siren announcing a bombing run of headbanging.

Vreid I probably like better than recent Satyricon because it still contains some of the tendencies of Windir along with a faster assault of Black N' Roll than Satyr and co.

They played the best gig I've ever seen on borrowed equipment; all their stuff was still in Roskilde, down to the last wire, down to the last shirt. Frost playing Filthgrinder on a borrowed kit... amazing. Mostly they played material from the last three albums, save for the inescapable Mother North... and a track from Dark Medieval Times. How cool is that? What major black metal act would do that?

Yeah definitely, after hearing I's awesome Between Two Worlds a few days ago, Abbath has pretty much become my fave BM vocalist.

I'm not too sure, honestly I've never been a Darkthrone fan. Haven't listened to anything by them recently, but if they're rockin' the BM like Satyricon, I'll have to check it out.

I'd say check Khold out first. Darkthrone rocking sounds next to nothing like Satyricon rocking.

Ruins from Australia are worth checking too, although they don't rock so hard the riffs are kinda similar here and there. Very different effect though.
