I think pretty much everyone here owns a Cannibal Corpse cd or has at one point in time heard a song byCannibal corpse, they are arguably one of the most recognized bands in the genre. What do you think has made them so successful as a band? Do you think they are repetitious in terms of their releases, or do you like the consistency within each album? Your thoughts |

Probably because their album covers and lyrics offended people which got them lots of publicity. They've also been pretty consistent. |

Let me just say, in terms of pleasing your core audience in metal, it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of situation. Change your sound, maybe gain new fans, alienate the old ones. Which makes it a VERY fine line between repetition and consistency for extreme metal bands. As a person who doesn't listen to too much death metal, I'd be inclined to say repetition, because that's what it sounds like to me. But I can't outright say that because I know that even though *I* think two albums by the same thrash band sound COMPLETELY different (EG, exodus' tempo of the damned, the atrocity exhibition)....my girlfriend would probably mistake them for the same album, along with 100 other thrash albums. So it all comes down to perspective I guess. |

I was thinking that. But Death Metal has a kind of satisfactory quality to it, like I said in the Vomitory review, which keeps me coming back for more, and CC's new albums generally fill that hole. |

I just made this thread because I am in love with their sound which as I'm sure you all know is pretty much the same every album. Well that and Corpsegrinder is just so damn sexy |

I think part of it is they just epitomise what death metal is in the eye of the general public. Their whole delivery, artwork, lyrics, band name, etc. They are the quintessential OTT death metal band and as such have a wide cultural appeal. |

Your img tag needs an 'src="http://" '. But yeah umm CC is consistent when its good and repetitious when it's bad I guess. Some of their albums seem dull, monotonous while others just have me tearing shit up and eating chicks' flesh like there is no tomorrow. |

They are consistent. Wretched Spawn and Kill signed their top form, to my eyes they always improved. The last album is kind of a step back. |

That's pretty much CC's whole selling point. When you look beyond the gory lyrics and titles, however, they're actually pretty "meh." Clearly an example of style over substance. |

I wouldn't say 'meh', they're better than that... the Death Metal equivalent of Bruce Springsteen, I suppose. Blue-collar stuff that you rock the fuck out to at the weekend. |

That's a load of bullshit. I've seen them live twice, and they not only play the songs faster live, they play them flawlessly. I personally feel the quality of their live shows is what keeps their fanbase loyal, as they truly do put on a fantastic show. Playing fast isn't a judge of talent itself, but when you can do it consistently for over an hour and not have any screw-ups, that's a testament to how hard these guys work. These guys aren't Dragonforce who can work pro-tools magic in the studio but play sloppy and half-assed live. |

To be fair, the only CC album I own is The Bleeding. Or, to be more specific, I used to own it but eventually sold it. |

did you call cc the death metall equivalent to bruce springsteen? Haha they are intense without overbr00talizing it like the bands they influence. I'd rather listen to them then 95% of the shit people call death metal today |

In positioning rather than sound, obviously. And I like The Boss, so... |

Exactly. That's the same for every genre. For most of the non-rock and metal fans, AC/DC are making the same album since their first, or Motörhead, or Manowar. BUT I think, it's better to stay with what you can best, as to try to innovate and evolute and change too much where the quality goes often lost and with it the credibility to the original fanbase. Slayer changed their sound - it went bad, and are now trying to go back. Metallica changed their sound - it went bad, and are now trying to go back. Megadeth change their sound - it went bad, and are now trying to go back. Def Leppard changed their sound - it went bad, and are now trying to go back. Paradise Lost changed their sound - first it got better, but then they've gone too far and it went worse, and are now trying to go back. AC/DC, Motörhead and Cannibal Corpse never really changed their sound and even if it IS sometimes boring, because it is the same all over again ![]() ![]() |

Cannibal Corpse have a really varied discography, its ridiculous to say that they make the same album again. Eaten Back to Life had a really thrashy sound with primitive growls, whereas Tomb of the Mutilated is a classic piece of Death Metal, deep guttural growls and little thrash influence. The Bleeding is the best selling Death Metal album ever-and for good reason. It had a more commercial sound and some in-studio vocal harmonization on tracks like Stripped, Raped and Strangled which was a new thing for the group. The later albums with George may be less varied in terms of sound, but try listening to Unleashing the Bloodthirsty and then Gallery of Suicide and telling me they're the same albums. The more recent releases have a very technical leaning with impressive guitar work and even varied (ish) drumming which is good for Cannibal Corpse, haha. I haven't fully heard the new one yet, so I can't comment. Cannibal Corpse are awesome, when I saw them live it was one of the best gigs I've ever seen. |
