Black metal can. Thrash and Death cannot. |

no but i'm not an expert on black metal riffing but it sounds like there is a hell of alot of tremolo picking so i was guessing they must be reliant on the low e |

Well in theory it could, so I voted yes-but in reality probably not. |

Ambient BM doesn't rely on power chords, don't you agree? |

Doesn't anything rock/blues based rely on power chords? |

i do agree because mainly because the guitar is pushed to the side and there are a few modes and scales that give very nice ambient effects |

I have only recently been teaching myself black metal guitar and most of it is speed picking single notes and power chords. |

I would love to hear a Thrash Metal song written without using a single power chord or open string run. |

dude that is what i would truly call progressive thrash metal i mean there are few minor chords and scales that would make it work |

A lot of black metal relies on simple two-note "chords", besides power chords to make simple phrases. (Also sounds good if you play certain intervals with extreme amounts of distortion) |

I tried to make some brakk metal sounding stuff on my guitar but I couldn't get the tone right. |

That does work! My guitar sounds like I'm doing cruel things to it, especially when I play the major 7th instead of the octave on a power chord :3 |

Major 7ths aren't really Black Metal, though. :( I like the 1-3-7 voicing better myself, especially for the bass. |

I'm having trouble playing stuff that sounds repetitive and droney; too used to playing with some kind of groove. |

i was thinking would simple chords like Em and Am make a pretty brutal sound because i can't tell with the current state of my amp |

Em makes me think of post-rock and whenever I play it, I feel the urge to play it quietly and then slowly get louder. |
