This is probably the most controversial album in the entire Megadeth discography. People seem to either love or hate it. So I think getting the overall consensus would be perfectly appropriate.

I vote "Hit." I think it's one of those albums where the expectations people had for it were more detrimental to its success than the actual music itself. It was hyped up as being Megadeth's "return to roots" after the decidedly bad Risk. And instead of being an RIP-style thrash album, it basically continued the "Heavy Metal" direction Megadeth took on Countdown To Extinction, Youthanasia, and (arguably) Cryptic Writings.

Putting aside all the "hype" and "expectations" for it seven years ago, however, the album has aged surprisingly well. And there actually a lot of really good songs on it. Disconnect (although, considering the fact that TWNAH was supposed to be a "return to roots" album, I'm surprised such a mid-paced metal track was chosen as the album opener), 1000 Times Goodbye (showing us, once again, that Dave definitely knows how to write a good break-up song), the title track, and yes even Return To Hangar.

The fact is that, after releasing a stylistic departure as extreme as Risk, it's probably unrealistic to expect a band to do a complete 180 and fully return to their roots just two years later on their next record. Megadeth obviously needed time to settle back into heavy/thrash metal and regain their barings. And that's how I ultimately see TWNAH: An honest effort by the band to regain direction and settle back into their heavy metal roots. Their "regeneration" album, if you will. The band IMO would then be fully regenerated on the following The System Has Failed three years later.

I sold it to my mate like 2 and a half years ago, I really didn't like it.

I like it a lot. For me any album that I enjoy is a hit.

Ditto. A couple of weak songs, but overall it's pretty good.

I'm a Megadeth fanboy. The only album I don't bother with that they released was Risk.

Love TWNAH, personally.

Bleh. Good moments mixed with unbelievably bad ones (those fucking soundbytes!), so I guess I want an in-between option as well.

Oh I am the biggest Megadave fan I know. But this album is far too, how do I say, inconsistent. Some real good songs like Disconnect, Dread and the Fugitive Mind, Moto Psycho, and Return to Hangar. But there are also some real turds on this album like 1000 Times Goodbye. Cant stand that song.

"I hope we can still be friends... I love you like you were my brother."

Yes, lame.

But actually not a bad album. I would have said in between but I gave it the benefit of the doubt in lieu of that option.

But isn't this exactly what Mustaine is trying to show with those spoken lines? That the response was actually lame? I agree that it is lame but purely on purpose and it manages to get the message through. Sure, other lyricists have passed the same message in a much better and more poetic way (the same theme is in some Dream Theater songs in its true artistic form) but I find that this works too.

Agreed. That soundbyte was basically supposed to be Dave's ex-girlfriend trying desperately to sugar-coat how she really felt about him and not hurt his feelings too much (despite not only initiating the break-up, but also confessing to cheating on him). Dave, of course, isn't fooled one bit by her "gentle letdown" so he just hangs up on her after the "I love you like you're my brother" line. Every guy has had to deal with a girl breaking up with or rejecting him, only for her to say, "I still would like to be friends with you, though" (even though what she really means is "let's not be completely at each other's throats"). Dave was simply pointing out how, ahem, lame (and irritating) it is when girls do that, particularly when they really no longer want anything to do with the guy.

Not a bad album, but a fairly mediocre one. Miss.

And if you're going to make a sequel to Hangar 18, at least make it good, eh?

I'd say their latest is my favourite in a while. The 2 previous efforts TSHF and TWNAH were pretty mixed for me.

Miss. My brother gave it to me because he hated it and I only took it because I didn't wanna pay for it.

Miss.

It's got some decent stuff on it, like Warhorse and Disconnect, but overall it's a pretty bland and uninteresting album. It certainly didn't showcase the talent of the line-up involved. A pretty lukewram attempt at rekindling the fire after the Risk debacle.

Actually, I think Risk was a much better album than The World Needs A Hero... At least, Mustaine tried something new. Here, he just seems to me he lost the formula to produce a decent heavy/thrash album.
Miss it is.
