Has anyone heard of these guys? They are currently touring the US and I went to one of their concerts and they were pretty solid. Its strange that their latest album (Slania) and the 2006 one (Spirit) werent reviewed here on this site.
They kinda have this really distinct sound to them, its not exactly folk and its not the usual melodic death. Sorta like something in between. Anyway they have a few songs on their myspace site.

Excellent 8-piece band. I own Spirit by them and its nothing short of brilliant.

I checked out two of their songs from their "Abgrunde" album...really good stuff! But he does sound different on Forest of Fog.

No, it's the Eluveitie guitarist who does everything in FoF, not the vocalist.

Anyway I reviewed their new album here:

It's good, but nothing amazing in my opinion.

These guys totally slipped under my radar until recently... Generally I'm fairly solid on keeping up with anything remotely melodeath.

Picked up Spirit and a DL of Slania and I like 'em a solid bit. I'm a scottish/irish guy so the melodeath stuff with the folk and Celtic elements really meld well in my opinion. Definitely fun to listen to.

I dunno why but I was kinda surprised these guys were from Switzerland.

Eluveitie are fantastic, although Slania isn't as good as Spirit was. Still have to see these guys, there from near where I live but I haven't managed to see them yet.

You really should..they are quite amazing live. And I agree I like Spirit a lot more than Slania. But they're both good albums IMO (I just wish they would decide which style they wanna take and not focus on both folk and melodic death).

Exactly.

The folk metal parts are excellent but the transition between the two styles is a bit jarring.

I don't know about this band. It seems kind of like they wanted to be black metal, but in the midst of creating their band they went "flutes, bagpipes, and a fucking giant lute thing? this is going to be SO black!". But they end up a power metal band with a bunch of funny guys trying to be kvlt.

The music rocks, though.

Wow, I don't get that impression at all. I think it went more like, "Let's make a folk metal band, but sound different than every other folk metal band."

I'm just talking about their appearance. In their music videos they're trying to look all kvlt, playing on a black stage with corpsepaint and a vocalist looking like he's trying to growl. The music itself is very unique and has a power-folk sort of feel to it. I dig it.

Probably the fact that they have so many members in the band (8!!) is causing this clash of styles here. I think their folk elements are bit stronger.

I love them. They're probably the best folk metal band out there.

I think this problem was almost non-existent on Spirit where I think the styles blended very well. But on Slania, yeah, it's pretty prominent.

Hey, Zeth's back! :) I agree, the problem is a lot more prominent on the second album.
