Exactly. If power metal bands started setting each other on fire and saying they were combating with the dragonflame it wouldn't add to the genre's mystique.

I try to separate the music from the musician too although I'll admit I'm biased towards bands who don't put on corpse paint and adopt pseudonyms.

I personally don't really dig the whole corpsepaint thing either, but it doesn't really bother me. I kinda like the pseudonyms business though, if done well, and not something strictly from corn.
Meh, if the music is good, that's good enough for me.

Exactly, i mean corpsepaint, pseudonyms, inverted crosses, etc are part of the genre and if done well they can be pretty cool but its the fucking music that counts, take king diamond for example if his music didnt kick ass he'd only be a stupid clown with a whiny voice, his whole imagery works because he actually writes great music.

That reminds me: We need more King Diamond reviews bitches!

haha, yeah, King Diamond is great. Excellent songwriting and excellent musicianship, fairly consistently.
And +10 on the KD reviews, if only as homage.

But, no matter what this discussion, I still fail to recognise what makes me so sad when I hear for example, Burzum's Black Spell of Destruction.

I think I see music as more than simply entertainment...

Music IS simply entertainment, but it has the potential to be more, an experience akin to a great movie or looking at an amazing painting. It is an art form, after all.

What a silly question. Of course it is. Dare I say it's the most consistently artistic genre? It's a lot of personal angst that people put into it. It doesn't seem like it's done for money put for catharsis.

And heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Seinfeld!!!

I don't know how much I can contribute to this thread, since I don't listen to black metal. But I believe the common term for Christian black metal is "un-black metal." Lame, I know. But worth mentioning.
