Judas Iscariot - Heaven in flames

Never gotten into Judas Iscariot. Always sounded like NM-era Ulver-rip-offs to me, even though JI came first.

hmm.. i disagree.. haven't heard more than two of his albums, though, and i don't know which albums you've heard. But Heaven in Flames doesn't sound anything like NM-era ulver, imho, except they both use drums and electric guitars.

I can't remember. It might have actualy been Heaven In Flames. Maybe it was just the guitar tone, as I've seen live footage which doesn't sound anything like Ulver. Out of interest, was Ji the first USBM band (not counting VON)

probably.. but i can't remember, i think i have seen some other old american underground black metal bands, but i'm not sure.

the earliest i can remember:
Von's 1989
Absu 1991 (started as death, though)
JI 1992
Havohej 1993

perhaps other ppl in here can be more helpful.

edit: i have added some more, cheated a little

Goatlord 1985
DEMONCY 1988
Bathym 1989
Crucifier 1990
Infant Sacrifice 1990
Irreverent (later BLACK WITCHERY) 1991
Black Funeral 1993

you can look at this page there a shitload of old american black metal bands: http://www24.brinkster.com/usbm/index2.html :D i have no more time to "waste", i'm cooking

Going by what we would call BM today, would Black Witchery be the earliest?

Indeed, not so good at all.
I reccomend you to check out the new Aeon, pretty damn solid album.

New Drudkh is awesome!! Woot! Good thing since the ep was kind of a letdown for me.

just finished: Dark Angel - Time Does Not Heal

it was only my first listen, but frankly it sounds much cooler than Darkness Descends.

How does it compare to previous full-lengthers?

Well it reminds me more of the old stuff like Forgotten Legends and SOngs of Grief and Solitude...
But you still can find traces of Blood in our Wells here and there.
