Yes yes yes.

Ah, reason.

Reason indeed.... Faith's ultimate nemesis.

And yet, not a poisoned arrow from Reason's blackened bow has made it into the fragile and corroded heart of Faith.

Rather worrying.

So either reason needs to try harder, or there must be something in "faith" after all...

If by "everything" you mean "the one thing," then that is correct.

Not to get preachy; I'll never tell anyone what to believe, but I do correct factual misunderstandings.

No, Faith is just much more attractive than Reason. Faith is like that hot girl you lust after in high school who has STDs and fucks you once because she feels like it, and then you get AIDs and never get over her or it.

Reason is like that shy girl in the corner who has a huge crush on you but never says anything, but opens up when you talk to her and make the first move.

Wow, how convincing.

Isn't it more the case that faith puts the burden on something else, an imaginary higher power? Reason makes you liable for your own actions. That's why people invented the 'god' idea, to explain what
couldn't be explained by science (which wasn't around then), and modern religions have evolved from then.

That's another way of looking at it, but I happen to think that my elaborate similie is clever, even if nobody else thinks so.

What was it that turned you off about religion? I'm interested in the Jews particulary, just out of curiosity.

The utter lack of reason involved in imagining a giant superman in the sky who loves you but hates anal sex and shellfish to be real, and the suspension of ones disbelief required to actually consider such a dumbass worthy of worship.

...but once you get over the shellfish, isn't there a concern that there might just be a big superman in the sky? I don't know if you were ever religious or not, but I was (or was brainwashed into being, whichever way you want to look at it), and the guilt one feels is pretty heavy. Family religious?

Yeah exactly. I always used to go to Sunday School and, although I can't remember very well, I think I must have just been in there one day and realised that what they were telling me was totally implausible... especially after learning about dinosaurs in school. This was probably about the same time I stopped believing in Father Christmas.

Extremely so.

No, there is no superman up in the sky. There's no need to even consider the possibility of a superman up in the sky. People who make such an outrageous claim are the ones who need to provide evidence beyond a 3000+ year-old-book written by an old nutcase who lived on psilocybin mushrooms and water.

Yep. Exactly. I used to go to Hebrew School. After I decided there was no god, I just became the most annoying little shit in all of existence. My teachers would have paid out the nose to strangle me, I'm sure.

The kicker was that I was not invited back for Hebrew Highschool.[/quote]

How do you get on with them? Mine think it's a phase I'm going through, and part of me wants to pretend to go along with it (as I'm doing at the moment, in a Jewish college. The sorta place that can kick you out if they catch you online/listening to BM. But I'm only there for a bit longer, so I'm going along with it to avoid fuss).

To be fair, the Hebrew Bible was actually compiled from at least four different sources, so that'd be many old nutcases who lived on psilocybin, mushrooms and water.

I too was raised Jewish, but then when I was 12 (after 6 years of Jewish elementrary school) stopped believing.

I wasn't raised very religious to begin with; hell, I knew about Darwin and evolution before I knew the Creation story. As I grew, I just didn't see any evidence for the kind of God described in the Torah. Everything I do believe I've seen evidence for in life. It's that simple for me; unless you have direct evidence for something, you shouldn't believe everything you read (this goes for science as well as religion - don't believe every "scientific study" you hear about, especially in the media, unless it has enough data behind it).

You mentioned that you're into kabbala...which texts etc? From what I've seen of it, it's all based on Judaism (Zohar).

What I'm saying is that the whole point of Christianity is that you can't stay in line and that it doesn't matter, and a lot of Christian religions somehow missed that. There are no "seven deadly sins," the "sacraments" don't count for anything, gays aren't any worse sinners than anyone else, etc.

The Zohar, Lurianic stuff, the Bahir. I'm Jewish enough that that's what I tell people, but I'm so far divorced from the basic tenets and the community that it doesn't really count. Metal is my religion.

Blasphemy! Paul Baloff would be the Messiah of any metal religion, while the members of Judas Priest would be Gods.
