Phil had nothing to do with the change in style. It was more like Atco insisted they not do anything remotely related to their 80's output and wanted something more like metallica, who, lest we forget sold a fucking shitload of records.

I mean, anyone that claims phil was responsible has never heard his Judas Priest inspired vocal on Power Metal. I think he could have kept that up if had wanted to, ie, kept in shape and not started smoking an ounce of weed a day.

His JP influence was still fairly apparent on CFH. Just listen to Shattered.

In response to COTB, glam metal wasn't really kicked out of the mainstream until Nevermind became popular in late-1991/early-1992. Remember that Warrant released Cherry Pie around the same time Pantera released Cowboys From Hell. And it was a smash.

I totally agree with that. CFH was a thrashier take on JP style sort of hair metal with an attitude, kinda like jackyl's image, but not their music so much.

Once grunge hit, they started in on their "trademark" sound more likely at the insistence of the label with VDOP.

I mean phil just wasn't the motivating factor here. Terry Glaze was fired because they didn't want a Joe Elliot clone singing in the band anymore and wanted to go heavier before they got phil. Makes sense to me. The band starts listening to more JP and thrash and wants to go that route.

And let's not forget the obvious hillbilly/western sound of CFH (amazing how so many people seem to either overlook or not even be aware of this "quality").

I agree that VDP is pretty much the album that established their trademarked sound. They started tuning their guitars a quarter-step down. Phil started to lose his JP influence (although his voice hadn't significantly deepened yet). And the whole album arguably established the 90's metal sound, which would later be built upon by bands like Machine Head and Fear Factory. Not to mention copied by numerous nu-metal and metalcore bands.

I hate to do it but I gotta say overrated.Back in the day I listened to them ALOT.I haven't really listened to them much in the last few years so a couple months back I dug VDOP and FBD out to give them a listen, not good. For me at least, their music has not aged very well at all.

Just because I'm in the mood, here are my favorite songs on each album (that I own).

Cowboys From Hell - Psycho Holiday
Vulgar Display Of Power - Regular People (Conceit)
Far Beyond Driven - Tie: Strength Beyond Strength and Slaughtered
The Great Southern Trendkill - Drag The Waters
Reinventing The Steel - Yesterday Don't Mean Shit
Miscellaneous - Where You Come From
