For those interested here's a review of Shogun done by AMG
http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fpfexzwkldte

I guess I'm not the only crazy dude who thinks it's any good.

Hahahahahahahahahaha.... Good one dude. Trivium sucks balls and to say they are thrash metal is insulting the entire genre, this is metal-core, border line, I could almost qualify it as being emo and therefore totally gay.

At least it has much in common with traditional (Thrash) Metal and it's way better than Nu Rock or Nu Metal like Linkin Park, Papa Roach, POD, System of a Down, Slipknot or Nickelback. THIS is radiofriendly bullshit. Metalcore (especially Trivium or BVMV or Shadows Fall) is (despite the catchy chorus / or verse) much more brutal and everything but radio rock...

SOAD are way better than Trivium. At least they're interesting to listen to. And have you heard the latest Slipknot? There's some sick guitar work on there too.

Weird thing is I prefer Trivium to SOAD and by far... I guess it all comes down to a matter of tastes and preferences.

Apart from the fact that they're totally different genres, SOAD have a lot more originality than Trivium.

True, but originality only gets you that far. Depending on my mood I prefer exciting, well executed, catchy stuff like Trivium over originality. Call it a guilty pleasure :P

nope, but actually giving them a chance does.

And like I said, Sirius plays them all of the time, and not just a few "hits", I've heard a lot of songs by them and guess what, mainstream or not, they are mediocre and nothing more than an entry point to better stuff.

If ripping off decades old Metallica songs with a dash of melodeath is your idea of inspired.

I don't understand, they sound less like Metallica and they still manage to suck hugely. How is that possible?

I guess it's all a matter of musical tastes...

The #1 criticism of The Crusade was that they were just copying Metallica. Explain how this equates with them not being thrash.

Again, I don't care that much if you don't like them, but don't try to say they're almost emo. Ridiculous...

hey guys why music was written has everything to do with whether the music is any good or not. how could anyone write a good song unless they were in a Buddhist state of zen being free of any desire for anything other than pure artistic expression with no thought for whether other people will like their music or not? it's impossible! all film soundtracks are awful. Jandek4life. i don't really know what i'm talking about anymore and my parodying of others's opinions has probably gone too far(!) but i do like the new Trivium and if their desire to be played on the radio is what made them write choruses with teh melody instead of just playing unmemorable Slayer-worship retro thrash then i approve of bands wanting to be played on the radio

Describing exaggerated extremes is never useful.

psh. if you're going to have a belief then you must be willing to take that belief to it's logical conclusion! and carry it over to other art forms! which means you think all movies suck because they were meant to appeal to an audience because they're so expensive that that's the only way producers will give them money to be made!

only Matt Heafy's vocal inflections remind me of Metallica (and that's like 1/5th of the time) and nothing on Shogun reminds me of melodeath so yeah not sure what you're getting at here.

right now i'd give it a 90 (but i've only listened to it three times so dunno what my opinion will be down the line). it's like this year's Colors: v. surprising for me. my only complaint right now is the harmonised choruses being used in almost every song (and being used only during the chorus) makes them come across as samey, even when the actual melodies are quite different. it's a small complaint, dwarfed by the albums many high points, and that i'd imagine will get smaller as the songs become more familiar.

that review knows what's up, which is weird since Allmusic usually fails miserably at reviewing metal.

Actually AMG is not always far off from what I think depending on who reviews it, but that's just me (The Dark Tranquillity ratings are pretty much on the money for exemple). As of right now I'd rate Shogun at about 85% take or give.

i haven't read all that many, so my opinion isn't based on much, just that most of what i've seen have been pretty bad.

I totally agree with you on this one, AMG don't know shit about how to review metal 90% of the time.

Why are the Trivium and Metallica threads the most popular threads here?

I'll take a wild guess and say it's because they're two of the most popular metal bands around.

i dunno, Trivum managed to find aperfect balance between catchy songs and awesome guitar playing that makes a 8 minute song go by in no time, while also having enough variety to stay entertaining for over an hour. they also fixed (almost) everything i remember not liking about their last albums (mainly Andy Sneap's production and the general lack of variety and anything that stood out as awesome); if someone had said a month ago that i'd think the new Trivium was the best metal album of 2008 i wouldn't have believed them lol
