After hearing two songs now (The Day That Never Comes, Cianide), i must say that i have been plesantly surprised. Both songs are pretty good and basically what i'd expect from Metallica now-a-days. It's pretty much back to the Loads stuff, but with a sprinkle from the black album

Havent thought much of them in the past but have enjoyed some of the current songs from the new album. Loving the lyrics for Cyanide too:- Sleep, and dream of this
Death angel's kiss
Brings final bliss

The missing link between AJFA and the Black Album is a pretty accurate description imo.

The Day that never comes is one of the best songs they've made.

Yeah, see, I keep trying to give Metallica the benefit of the doubt, and then I read fanboy nonsense like this... nothing on Death Magnetic touches anything from their pre-Black Album days. Apart from the boring bits on Ride The Lightning, maybe.

Boring bits on RTL? That invalidates almost everything I've ever taken from your posts and reviews Zad.

Trapped Under Ice (sorry :P ) and Escape are boring indeed.

No. I think a lot of songs of AJFA and Kill 'em All is boring too. This one has better moments here and there, but is not a better album. I'm not really a fanboy you see.

Im pretty sure that the only reason this doesnt sound like their pre-TBA era is because they're not trying to make a thrash album anymore. To be honest I dont think they can make one even if they tried. The driving force behind most thrash bands is their deep set anger towards something in particular, and Metallica have lost that edge over the years and mellowed down.
Ive never been a fan of thrash (in fact the only thrash albums I own are Metallica's first few albums) and I think TBA was their best album in terms of sound and complexity. As for DM, it takes the best parts of Load and combines them with the heavy metal elements of TBA. I think this would be the only way Metallica can impress the metal critics (that's you lot) and still manage to sell enough albums.

It would be if they did, but DM combines the best of the first 4 albums with a little Load hint. The vocal style sometimes, the melodie parts...but most of the record is bay area thrash metal. Ok, the songs are different, but they were it on Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning or Kill em All too. Maybe 1 or 2 songs are Load or TBA Style, the rest is much more complex in the AJFA/RTL/MOP way with pure thrash riffing.

Agreed.

The first track off DM rips! It's not the next Master Of Puppets or anything, but they shred hard on this album. If you don't think it's "thrashy" then you don't know what thrash is.

The haters will continue to hate and bash this album, but the long time fans should be pleased. They may even attract new fans with Death Magnetic. If this wasn't Metallica it would score in the mid 80's or higher and receive an album of the month award. But since it is...well, we'll see what happens on Friday.

And that's just my opinion, which can't be wrong because it's an OPINION.

Let the flaming begin and the trolls crawl out of the woodwork. It doesn't bother me.

I guess if you don't like the seventeen minutes that is The Unforgiven III and Suicide & Redemption (which is really fucking cool) then I guess you wouldn't like the second half. I refuse to think that the Judas Kiss and My Apocalypse suck so those two songs must be what you're talking about.

As far as you can hear all songs on Youtube...we can name the game. ;)

The two songs that IMO sounding a little bit too loadish are The Unforgiven III - which could be on Load or Reload - no doubt. The same loadish guitars, the same loadish melodies [It's the same with the new A tout le monde version on United Abomination, which also doesn't fit on the record] and little bits of Broken Beat & Scarred, Cyanide and the Day that never comes. (and this doesn't mean that they are bad, because even Load and Reload had some good moments [Ain't my Bitch, 2x4, King Nothing, Hero of the Day  , Fuel, Better than you...)

And the instrumental is IMO one of the best instrumentals they ever made.

It's his opinion, and opinions can't be wrong. :lame:

All those who hate it - cool. All those who think it's mediocre - cool. All those who love it - cool. There is no right or wrong, just subjective opinions. My opinion is that this is a really good album. Some parts are almost progressive while others are balls out thrashy. Does this erase the 18 years of crap they've put out since 1990 (yes, I liked the black album for the most part)? No. But does that mean this album can't be good? Nope!

Give is a solid listen without the bias, then give your opinions. I am not ashamed to admit I like it quite a bit. I don't know if Metallica is "back," but this album rocks hard in my opinion. :dio:

P.S. It's no where near as bad as In Flames latest few albums. BLAH!
