Whitechapel and Suffocation are pretty horrific imo, though I've only listened to Souls to Deny by Suffocation. Not the worst I've ever heard, but most of the god awful DM I've listened to just melts out of my memory. It's hard to remember truly BAD bands, though my friends have some pretty terrible stuff, mostly garage bands and the like....

Hey, it's just my opinion, and like I said, all I've heard is Souls to Deny, I didn't like it at all, was boring. I've heard that Effigy is good but I've never got a chance to listen to it. *shrugs*

In his defense, everything I've heard from Suffocation has been really boring.

All I really like by Suffocation is Human Waste. The rest seemed like standard brutal dm.

Except Suffocation ARE the standard of brutal Death Metal. It's not their fault a million idea-less hacks copied them verbatim.

The death metal-y parts always sounded brutal to me. I always imagined them as the brutal dm Opeth. Am I doing it wrong?

Eh, I suppose. There is Suffocation influence there, but I always heard a lot of Deicide and Morbid Angel, too - up to the listener, really. I'll have to give them a listen again, not heard any 'cocke in a while.

Akercocke isn't really a band you can pigeon-hole into one genre. They have a lot of different influences from all over the musical spectrum, and every album sounds a bit different.

Yeah. That's not really what I was trying to do. Just looking at their death metal aspects, especially on the early albums Bastard Nazarene and Goat, the death metal seemed to be what is done in brutal dm.

Getting past the fact you said suffo are one of the worst dm bands you have heard, Souls to Deny is awesome in it's own right. Very very underrated album imo. It has some of the best riffs and solos they have ever recorded, plus it has this almost experimental vibe to it. I think people don't like it at first because the production kind of sucks, but its a great album once you get used to it.

The only Suffocation album I really enjoy is Pierced From Within. The rest is kinda meh, even if they are pioneers of meh brutal dm. Pierced at least has some really stomping moments and energy that their other albums seem to lack, IMO.
