The best Metallica I've heard in a long time currently goes under the name Wolfpack Unleashed. The CD is titled Anthems Of Resistence..check it out if you have the time. I think they're great.

Only that they sound nothing like Metallica.

Check it out. There's even a Wikipedia stub about Metallica's "Unknown Ninth Album": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untitled_Metallica_album

I'll admit that I'm actually going to miss the Eb tuning (assuming this rumor is true), but the album does sound quite promising.

Of course, St. Anger did too and look how that turned out....

Eh, considering they couldn't top Kill Em All in thier prime, I highly doubt that's going to happen anyways.

Of course it won't happen. Haha. I think they next album will be good, but it'll be more like Load and Reload.

Has anyone listened to those new tracks on YouTube where someone else recorded studio quality versions? They actually sound a lot better that way.

I would actually prefer them to go back to the Load/ReLoad sound. I really do enjoy all of ReLoad, and about half of Load. The Bluesy sound really suited Kirk Hammett, and for the most part they were really fun songs. I would rather see them perfect that style and produce a truly great hard Rock album instead of retreading old ground they themselves have no desire to go back to.

Honestly I don't really care gave up a while ago on them. What makes me mad is that so many talented bands out there don't get the support bands like Metallica do and they struggle or give up. Credit to Metallica for great marketing but I wish more people would broaden their horizons and give others a go.

Matt Sorum's comments on the Wikipedia article gives me hope but I won't be surprised if it sucks.

Metallica just started a website called Mission Metallica, where you can see exclusive in-studio videos of the album's production called Fly On The Wall. Including riff/song samples (note: You have to register with their website to view all the videos - don't worry, you don't have to pay anything).

Overall, not bad. Metallica seems to be going for a more Stoner Rock-ish sound, kind of like more recent Monster Magnet. They're also now using Standard Tuning for some of their songs, which is nice because it gives them a bit more variety. James' lyrics sound fairly rough around the edges ("Suicide! I'm already dead!"), but hopefully these are just demo lyrics. This is certainly a massive improvement over St. Anger, from what I've heard so far. And while it certainly doesn't sound like it will bring back the "Metallica must be thrash metal!!!" crowd, I think Black Album/Load/ReLoad fans should be pleased.

Yes, this could be really good-but it won't be thrash metal as we know it.

The "Bow down, sell your soul to me" bit is fucking kick ass, great riff.

Well, last time Metallica try to "thrash" their old self, we got St Anger, so, let me tell you, I can do without the thrash...

At what point was ST. Anger thrash? At all?

It wasn't, hence the word try and the quotation marks around thrash.

What I meant to say was I don't think Metallica where even trying to be thrash, all the build up shit about how it's a return to the old school was just clever marketing.

I'll have to disagree with you then... IMO, they were carried away during those sessions and did crap while seriously thinking they were making a brOOtal return to their thrash roots with a modern twist...
Now, let us all hope that, with Rick Rubin directing the new sessions, they stop trying to be something they cannot be anymore.

I think they did try and make a thrash album with St. Anger and my guess is Rubin has already found out that they cant seem to go back to their older glory again so he is trying to aim for something between the black album and Load/Reload. That why they should please some fans (like myself) and get a commerically successful album.
Personally I have a feeling this would be alright. To be honest I dont mind them making something even half as good as the black album (which is my second favorite Metallica album after Master of Puppets) or even something as good as Load (personally I thought it was a good album). I think something metal/stoner/bluesy with killer solos would definitely be a hit.
