I think this album is certainly a sell out in a way, and I'm not one of those people who throws that term at every band who changes their sound. Its definitely not as big of one as Risk, but I think that Mustaine saw the success of Metallica's Black Album and tried to emulate it by making the songs simpler, more catchy, etc... Obviously I have nothing to back this up, but tis what I think.

Your absolutely right. Mustaine's career is the story of a man trying to outdo Metallica, often with some success, often without.

The increased technicality and prog edge on Rust in Peace is an obvious response to ...And Justice For All.

Megadeth's move into alt. rock type stuff on Cryptic Writings is a response to Metllica doing the same the year before.

Risk was basically made because Ulrich said Dave wouldn't have the balls to do a non-Metal album. That and money.

Thankfully he wasn't fucking stupid enough to try and make his own St Anger.

TSHF is his "return to the roots" album, just like St. Anger. It just doesn't suck. So again, he parrallels them, and after seeing Some Kind of Monster, it's obvious he always will.

Hmm you could argue that, but TSHF is essentially a continuation of the sound on The World Needs a Hero, obviously done as a return to the roots before Metallica got round to it.
