Yeah, Sweden has put a fair number of good bm albums out there over the years, I don't mean to disparage them or the US by putting them in 6/7/8 along with say, Italy.

And I'm quite hopeful that Skartasis/cotb will weigh in on the country ranking thing too.

Interesting list. I agree more than disagree but I'd put Ukraine second with France, Germany and Finland all battling for third.

I'd probably put the US higher than I did if I really thought about it, just for Krieg and Leviathan.

Drudkh and associated projects are the only Ukranian stuff I'm particularly fond of, whereas France has Osculum Infame, Mutiilation, Vlad Tepes, Blut Aus Nord, DsO, Mystic forest and Bekhira as well as lesser but still good bands like Belketre, Arkhon Infaustus, Belenos, Epheles and Spektr.

Are we talking current day black metal or overall? If I made a list it would be different if we take the past into account. France would be a lot higher, for one.

Good bands, indeed. 75-80/100 type stuff.

Overall definitely. If it were current I doubt Norway would be topping many people's lists.

If we count pre-2000 I would say Norway, post-2000 only Norway would be down the list a bit.

Yes, that would be a definite split. Post-2000 I'd still put Norway 3-5ish. Pre-2000 I would take Norway over everyone else, combined, without a doubt.

Bathory. Come on.

But I don't get the hate, Sweden is probably a better country for metal overall, Norway was just more focused.

That's if you think melodeath is a good thing.

I find it hard to categorize Bathory's best material as black metal.

And yeah, I have about 110 albums from Swedish bands compared to 85 from Norwegian ones, but guess which ones I listen to more?

The melodeath material, as Rhys hinted at, collects dust.

Candlemass, Bathory, Entombed, and Meshuggah are hard to beat. Sweden isn't all about melodeath.

Well certainly. I have more albums from Sweden than anywhere else, so yeah, there are plenty of non-melodeath winners there. Norway is just better.

melodeath is pretty good when you first get into metal, obviously theres a few gems that stand the test of time (Slaughter of the soul) but overall black metal is the best kind of metal.

Norwegian black metal is my favorite, but Sweden and France have some great bands.

I wish their was more good shit from Denmark since I'm half-danish, but it's a pretty small country so I don't expect too much.
