I think that's dead on. The music has certain ideas which are going to be emphasized more in certain audiences and manipulated differently by different followers.

Fascinating stuff, and something I have long been trying to formulate in my own mind. A certain geographical/demographical determinism study to metal would make for a heck of an interesting dissertation topic.

It's funny because whenever someone describes the Birmingham roots of heavy metal that's what they're always doing; it just hasn't been developed for other regions. How could you describe thrash's roots in California as compared to Germany's thrash? Florida dm to NY; the latter has the obvious hardcore emphasis? I think black metal is the most apparent because the pervasively political nature to it. Misanthropy is a rejection of the current order if not anything else.

Some more articles on black metal, specifically NSBM.

1st

"White Power, Black Metal, and Me: Reflections on Composing the Nation"

http://leeds.academia.edu/documents/007 ... _Lucas.pdf

The writer of this is from my own University and I think is a grad student in the music department. I don't know her though. Maybe she'll be pissed off about me posting her stuff on metal forums but it seems to be freely available on the internet. It's pretty readable, actually. It's attempting to apply Foucault to the English black metal scene.

According to the article, her brother is the drummer from English "are they racist or not?" black metallers Winterfylleth, hence the access she got to the band, I suppose.

2nd

http://www.inter-disciplinary.net/ci/mm ... 0paper.pdf

"True Aryan Black Metal: the meaning of leisure, belonging and the construction of whiteness in black metal music"

This article is ethnographic and features interviews with some mates of Alex Kurtagic. The Hellraiser shop he talks about is where I buy all my stuff too! How exciting.

(I think this must be a draft as it is full of typos)

Sorry bro but that first article will be distracting me from reading yours. 'Noise: The Political Economy of Music' sounds likes an awesome book.

Her citing Hobsbawm's invented tradition idea kinda pokes fun at her brother's band's emphasis on english heritage, no?

Yeah. I really wonder what he makes of the article.

Her saying the band wanted to "rebrand" themselves as not racist then probably not too negatively. It was interesting but nothing amazing. I love that she quoted Robert Walser.
