Well Shrines is still their best album by far but Annihilation just seems to get overlooked by many for some reason, or at least it feels that way. It's not top notch from start to finish but it has some killer tracks on it like Cast Down the Heretic.

Seriously if you haven't heard In Their Darkened Shrines maybe that is what your missing. I do like Suffo more though :dio:

*Ah Nile talk I must interupt with my blatant fanboyism*
I don't hear any similarities to Suffo in the songwriting or riffs.I think they kind of did their own thing, ala Cryptopsy. They liked death metal and injected their own twisted flavor to the mix.If anything I hear more Nocturnus in Nile's early demos and Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren Ka,which is tied for my fav of theirs along with BSoV.

Honestly I don't see too much of a new wave or anything in DM.Yes it is gaining a bit of popularity,I mean hell just a few years ago I was the only person in my state that knew about tech-death,much less metal. But I guess I don't consider anything core related to be truely metal. Its its own seperate entity, cause the kids around here only like and know the trendy stuff, never mention any actual DM bands.Even when I show them they don't like it.

I'd say old Children of Bodom,In Flames and the like were big influences, but crossover appeal is so big that only talking about the bands in the genre itself is tough. The thing I love about my DM is there are so many variations and ways to enjoy it,from tech-stuff to ugly underground to the old-school which is having quite alot of tribute style bands and even old dogs coming back like Unleashed,Vader,Pestilence.Vogg from Decapitated is playing second guitarist in Vader btw,I 'm excited! :dio:

The lack of Amon Amarth in this thread shakes me to my very core.

They may be a good band, but they haven't become influential yet I think. In a few years you'll see lots of AA clones, don't worry!

I wasn't really calling them influential, but all the mentions of Nile and Suffocation (who aren't really influential either) made me wonder where the Norse gods of metal were at.

More like ripped off a lot instead of influential. I never see them get the credit they deserve. Most of it tends to swing toward Obituary.

Who did Suffocation rip off, then? You can thank them for everything from Brutal Death Metal to, erm, Deathcore, but they're certainly more influential than Amon Amarth, ffs.

hahahaha did someone seriously post this? Amon Amarth aren't even in the same league as Suffocation. Suffocation practically invented brutal and technical death metal what have Amon Amarth done besides make synchronized headbanging look good?

Oh and for Nile uh... they would make good Egyptian tour guides.

Obituary came in at the right time when Death metal was first emerging in Florida they are a good band but nothing compared to Suffocation.

AH! Still disagree. Lots of bands ripped Suffo off, but they are a giant in the Death Metal world despite that. Besides, who says that 'ripping off' isn't 'being influenced by'? Works for all these Thrash bands.

So what exactly are we saying is the difference between influence and rip off, here?

If ripping off someone is taking a riff knowingly, and being influenced is taking a riff subconsciously because the music is ingrained in them....well...

Not much difference.
