Alright... I know ive already commented but ive been listening to these two tracks several times and my opinion is quite different from most of you here.

Now ive been an Opeth fan for a VERY long time now (I started listening to them in the mid-90s). I have all their albums and I still listen to them on a regular basis. My two personal favorite albums are Moringrise and Blackwater Park and honestly I even loved their slower tempo songs on Damnation.

Now in my opinion Ghost Reveries step in the wrong direction. Dont get me wrong! Its still an excellent album....and I would definitely rate it highly. But it is no way near as perfect as their older material. I miss the spark their music had prior to Deliverance. Whenever I listen to Ghost Reveries and then play Moringrise I notice an obvious dullness to their sound in the former(at least to my ears).

I know bands "evolve" and change their sound but to me this isnt what I would call an improvement. And from what I heard on the two songs from "Watershed" it seems to be going in the same direction Ghost Reveries did. I feel the unique sound of Opeth is gradually disappearing and we get this new death jazzy sound. Its still great stuff...but not as special as their older material.
Anyway just my two cents.....

IMO Ghost Reveries was a very good idea in principle; a lot of the elements they added were ones that went well with their sound. The problem was the songs weren't as good or inventive as I would want to hear from Opeth.

I like these songs a lot because they incorporate the elements that I thought were a good idea and make them work better. Maybe because whatsisname on the keyboard has settled in more, perhaps, or because Mikael was feeling more inspired.

On the GR tour I thought it was funny how the keyboard actually sounded better on the older songs, that they had just had to hurriedly write a keyboard part into, than the newer ones where they'd written it with the keyboard in mind.

Ok, i have heard the album twice now and i must say that this is their most experimental album to date. Probably their most keyboard oriented as well. It doesn't really sound like any of the old albums except for maybe in Heir Apperant which gives me serious MAYH feeling, more precisely DoTF. Mike's vocals are as great as ever and with the clean to harsh vocal ratio beeing somewhere between 75/25 you will be hearing alot of Mike's ful and warm voice.

The out-of-tune guitar at the end of Burden was a real WTF moment but probably put in as a joke/Scott Walker thing. The use of disharmony is also used in a few of the others songs as well. Overall a great new album from Opeth.

I HATE scott walker, I think its pretentious bullshit. but I like a lot of watershed. Burden is possibly the best thing i've heard in a while. same with coil and heir apparent. the last two tracks have yet to grow on me. they seem a bit weird right now still.

I like the album, and it's good, but it has something other Opeth albums don't; a best song. The Lotus Eater is SO MUCH BETTER than anything else on the album it's almost not worth listening to any other songs.

Ive listen to the album several times and I think it is an OK album. Its certainly a step up from Ghost Reveries but no way near anything of their older materials.
On the plus side the vocals are amazing and their new guitarist is certainly really talented as most of us expected him to be. But the song structure is what really bothers me. Like I said in a previous post, with Ghost Reveries Opeth lost the thing that made them sound really unique.
Its not a bad album...and if another group made this I would certainly give it a good score, but I expected better from Opeth because they've delivered several excellent albums in the past. This does sound like a metal version of Scott Walker (and I dont see that as a good thing).
I dont like the direction this is going..and I really hope this is just a different album that they decided to make for the time being and theyll go back to their old sound again. Dont get me wrong im really trying to like this album but to me it sounds less metal and more jazzy than progressive.
I can see how some people might like this, but im not quite sure if this would appeal to fans of Opeth's older stuff like myself.

I agree. That said, good album, relaxing.

I love the new album. I don't listen to Opeth as "metal" persay, in that I expect a certain degree of harsh elements. I know Opeth doesn't write with that in mind, and it's certainly one thing that makes them great.

Opeth is music that transcends genre fixation. It is what it is, and I think it's magnificant. It's hard for me to score this one, but it's close to 100, as are most Opeth albums in my mind.

And I love the oddities of this album, including the ending of Burden.

After one listen, am slightly underwhelmed. Loved GR, and the only good song so far seems to be Lotus Eaters. Everything else seems slightly auto-pilot-y. Will keep at it, obviously.

I'll probably buy Watershed if it comes in stock at work when it releases, but every other metal release that hit the new releases wall at work was awful this year.

Blooddrunk is #4 best-seller.

Blooddrunk wasn't even publicized here XD The only metal cds that were put on special display were the new Testament, In Flames, Hate Eternal, Stuck Mojo and Belphegor.

Watershed is really good. overall it's more psychedelic than anything they've done before, and even though there's less death metal, each death metal section is some of the most intense stuff I've heard from Opeth.

I am not dling this as that will destroy my motivation for buying it.

GR was Opeth's worst to date, IMO, but like I said at the time I thought the next one would be better. From the two tracks I heard I think it will be.
