"Classics" of the genre? What genre do you think we're talking about here? They mentioned In Flames and Dark Tranquillity; those are both melodic death. "Classics" include At The Gates and "Heartwork" by Carcass. After that, you've got old Arch Enemy, old In Flames, old Soilwork, etc.
Furthermore, why shouldn't they start listening to what appeals to them, and move on from there? Are you saying there's a right and wrong way to listen to metal? Please, enlighten us puny mortals as to the correct way to listen to metal.
By Classics, I mean of metal in general. Thrash, Death, Black, whatever. I am not talking about melodic death so much as metal in genreal, referring to the thread title about needing guidance.
Starting in what appeals to you isn't necessarly bad, but when somebody is trying to get into metal, starting with In Flames, no matter how "easy on the ears" it may be, isn't a good idea. You miss out on the classics and have to come back to them later.
Megadeth - Rust in Peace, Peace Sells
Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Kreator - Pleasure to Kill, Terrible Certainty
Sodom - Persecution Mania, Agent Orange
Bathory - s/t, Blood Fire Death, Under The Sign
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Darkthrone - Trasylvanian Hunger, A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, Det Son Engang Var
Obituary - Cause of Death, Slowly We Rot
Entombed - Left Hand Path, Nihilist Demos
Autopsy - Severed Survival, Mental Funeral
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness, Blessed are the Sick
I think you get the idea of what I mean by classic. These all helped their respective genre progress, and should help a first time listener decide what he/she likes. It's good to check out what you're interested in, but a thread asking for metal guidance with a big list of later metal that doesn't represent the genre at all and no essentials/classics doesn't make any sense at all to me.
So they want to explore Melodic Death? Why not figure out where it came from, listening to the Iron Maiden influence, then old-school swedish death, Carcass, At the Gates, etc?
What I'm saying is starting with stuff like In Flames, Soilwork, etc. is working in reverse, and basically gives a false idea of what metal is all about.
For Melodic Death Recommendations, besides the ones I listed above:
Eucharist - Mirrorworlds
Dismember - Like an Ever Flowing Stream (Not quite Melodic Death, but tons of melody)
Intestine Baalism - Banquet in the Darkness
Autumn Leaves - As Night Conquers Day
Arghoslent - Incorrigible Bigotry
Amorphis - Tales From the Thousand Lakes
There's no proper way to listen to metal, only a better way of going about getting into the genre.
