Not only that, but it's boring, predictable and an all-round waste of talented musicians! Who's with me?

Given that some of my favorite bands play melodeath/melodic death, I'm going to have to disagree with you.

Surely you can't say that At the Gates, The Duskfall, Dark Tranquillity, and the early works of Soilwork and In Flames is boring and predictable music. "Heartwork" by Carcass is usually considered a groundbreaking album, or at the very least, quite abundant with ass-kicking.

Carcass get bonus points for being kinda death-grindy though, and Soilwork have some good earlier stuff when they placed the "death" before the "melo" .. however I can't think of a single In Flames song that I don't detest, and At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity can't hold my attention past the first listen.

Mostly all their songs are guilty of style over substance.. I hate to say that about DT because they seem to have a little more integrity than most, but.. yes, I'm saying it anyway, heehee

I can't say of any metal genre that it's good or bad. It's more logic to say that each style has good bands and bad ones. In every style there are more bad bands than good, and melodic death is no exception. However, bands like Dark Tranquility or At the Gates make up for the bad ones, just like Blind Guardian makes up for Edguy in power or Ulver for Marduk in black.
*runs before Edguy, Marduk fans stumble into the thread*

Most nowadays melodeath bands produce derivative shit, but do not dismiss all the great melodic deathmetal bands from the past like At The Gates, Eucharist, Early In Flames and Dark Tranquillity.

Insomnium are quite new (only two albums) and they're good... and there's more... but like the 666th said there's always more shitty than awesome bands... why should melodeath be any different ? :?

Arsis - A Celebration of Guilt is a very good album (also rather new).

Yeah, I don't find the newer melodic death all that entertaining, but the genre has had it's moments.

Melodeath is great if done right, just like every other metal genre.
Nightrage, Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates, and old In Flames all kick ass.

Point me towards some Insomnium samples, man, I'm willing to be proved wrong.

a waste of musicians?

Im not a big fan of the genre but i wouldn't say there wasteing there musicianship. It may not end up with overall better music, but they usually have more technical guitars at least.

I have a short attention span so all music only works in small doses for me. However, I like a lot of melodeath.

Voted "Blah". Some of is indeed seriously not bad, but most if it, although it might sound good at first, is actually poppy crap.

Like for every other genre, it has its shadows and highlights.
