Many BM bands have both clean and harsh vocals. Ulver - Bergtatt has very little harsh vocals (almost all clean). The best thing I own without any harsh vocals is Forest Of Fog - Rabenflug, which actually has no vocals at all, you might want to try that, here are links to two samples:

Into Eternity have very little harsh vocals... check out the Viking scene too, some bands might fit your taste there... Finntroll could be a good start...try their last album... :D

but, I think a little harsh vocals are what make extreme metal extreme...

Hey, I wanted to name Into Eternity!
But there's also Scar Symmetry, Root, Emperor, lots of 'em!

It really doesn't groove with the music. Imagine Chris Barnes from Cannibal Corpse SINGING these lyrics:

Eyes bulging from their sockets
With every swing of my mallet
I smash your fucking head in, until brains seep in
through the cracks, blood does leak
distorted beauty, catastrophe
Steaming slop, splattered all over me

It would sound com-fucking-pletely ridiculous.

Agreed. It's too vague of a term.

Agreed, I don't like the term "metal" as for a bands description either...

so few suggestions :? I was hopping you guys knew more about metal... is this a poser area or what ???

anyways thanks for your suggestions... I'll make sure to find Ulver, Into Eternity, Finntroll (a friend told me they sound like classic Helloween with harsher vocals, so why not... ), Scar Symmetry, Emperor (what album should I pick ?)....

I think it's gonna be harder to fid Forest Of Fog & Root but I'll try...

anyone has other bands to name ?

There are almost no clean vocals in any emperor. Any one who tells you that they dont use harsh vocals should be shot.

Forest Of Fog is easy piesy to get, just mail the dude, he has no label or distribution. Don't be pissed when you get a homebrew cd though. Be sure to get Rabenflug, the other ones have harsh vocals. It's seven euro inc. shipping. The website is http://www.forestoffog.ch.vu/ If you can't understand German, you can mail the guy in English: ForestOfFog@gmx.ch

Funny you should mention it, I was planning to write a text on that very name, and how it should change.

I don't know how I forgot!!! But if you guys want an interesting vocal aproach in your Black Metal try Inquisition (pure trance-indusing Black Metal hell!!!); it took me a bit to get used to the vocals, but now I enjoy them a lot.

Try their latest album: Magnificent Glorification of Lucifer.

three bands I completely forgot about and use clean vocals and harsh vocals that are not too difficult to get in :

- Extol
- Solefald
- Arcturus

those three bands are all better than average (hell yeah !) and thus worth checking ! :D

i dont think extreme metal can be made with clean vocals, although that is what i used to look for before accepting harsh vocals (see old crap thread entiteled "harsh vocals" i posted.)
slayer are, on the other hand, imo extreme and use clean vocals (reign in blood) thats very heavy with no growling or stuff.
