So, what's the verdict? Do you feel Slayer still has a little something left in them, or is it time for them to retire?

I'm sort of in the middle. I really enjoyed Christ Illusion (the band's last album). And the song Flesh Storm is possibly the best song Slayer's done since Seasons In The Abyss. But on the other hand, the band hasn't really done anything new or innovative in over fifteen years (other than give their music a more contemporary sound and add in some nu-metal influences in the late 90's). Nor do they seem inclined to.

I can see CI as being a nice "Farewell album" for the band, as it sort of sums up everything they've done throughout their career.

Well... they did really lot, but i think it's their time to retire...
If they remain playing i think they won't do anything innovative, people will just start to get annoyed while they're trying to do something (whatever).
So My final answer is yes they should retire !

(and metallica should retire years ago, with st. anger i started to hate them)

I said no, because they haven't done much great in many years. Though I'd still like to see them live, they usually come through here once every two years.

Their studio albums have lost their gusto so I think it would be alright for them to retire from new albums but if they continued to tour it would be cool. With Hot Topic, though, and its support of Christ Illusion, I doubt they will stop anytime soon due to the financial benefits.

I ignored them for the most part until Christ Illusion, which I think is a good album. I think they should keep going.

no, there's still more to give. the fast songs on CI are pretty cool, and if they have more of that and less slow, boring garbage like Eyes of the Insane to give us they should go on.

Motorhead haven't changed that much (at least from the albums i've heard) and no one's calling for their retirement..

I think they still have a little more left in them. CI while not a great album, wasn't that bad either. Although I liked GHUA more(yes, I see many eyebrows raising), I don't think CI was a weak attempt at "going back to their roots". I still give that album a spin once in a while. The music is fast paced and there were more than just flashes of vintage Slayer. They can still rock your socks off. If Motorhead, Dio and Ozzy can still carry on, I see no reason why Slayer cannot . Slayer is :dio:

never liked slayer alot....got three records..reign in blood, seasons in the abyss and christ illusion..reign in blood being my favourite. judging from christ illusion, they should retire, but as mentioned, it would be cool if they continued touring.

They have more life left in them than Metallica, that's for sure.

I'm not quite sure about that... If Metallica manage to regain a decent production and to turn down the hype thing (a.k.a. no more St Shitter !), they could still write pretty good songs, this based on the fact that Metallica were able to re-invent their sound with Load and Reload (two albums I quite enjoy). On the contrary, Slayer has, imho, gave their best with their "classic era" (up to Seasons in the Abyss). From there, they went downhill and were unable to recapture the brutal grace they used to diplay.

They should retire, I say.

They should maybe hang around as a touring entity, but they are long, long past it as a writing band. Hanneman has lost any sort of commitment to songwriting and Araya's voice is completely, totally, embarassingly shot to pieces.

Lombardo should have better things to do with himself.

They've had a few good songs in the past seventeen years, but they haven't been able to write a consistently good album. Give up songwriting, just tour.

Lombardo should stick around the Zorn/Patton clan. He'd had more interesting things to do than waste his insane drumming skills with Slayer.

Agree they have always stayed true and haven't released an album like St Anger.

Have you heard their last three albums?

Just because none were as unbelievable terrible as St Anger was doesn't mean they had any more integrity about them.

Am i the only one who thinks Araya sounds a bit like the system of a down vocalist on christ illusion? long time since the last listen, but i think i was comparing them.

Exactly. What's with all this 'oh noes, they made an album(s) I didn't like, they should retire' shit? I haven't heard a Slayer album that I didn't like, including Diabolus, God Hates... and Christ Illusion, which was the best thing they've done for years. Retire?! Come on.
