I got Insomnium's most recent release last week and it hasn't left my playlist ever since.
The second track, While we sleep, is reminiscent of "Above The weeping world" and simply kicks ass. As for the rest I thought it sounded like a cross between the best elements found on "Across the Dark" and "One for sorrow". Their sound has really matured. It isn't just straight forward Melodeath anymore. It has this gloomy sound that reminds of other Finnish acts "Swallow The Sun" and "Amorphis" and has a little goth mixed in as well.

Overall I am extremely pleased with the release and is IMO Insomnium's best work since "Above The weeping world".

Your thoughts ?

Haven't heard it yet. Insomnium has been very consistent throughout their career. However, with the introduction of clean vocals, they lost me a bit. Their debut is my favourite and their second and third I have played so much that I know every note by heart. I haven't seen the new albums on the shelves yet. Although as soon as I see it I will purchase it and give it a proper listen. Thanks for the thread.

Just trying to spark some meaningful discussions on theses boards :P

On their recent release, Insomnium still uses clean vocals, but in my opinion they blend a lot better with the rest of the music and feel a lot more organic.

Yes. The clean vocals sounded very superficial and somewhat out of place. Organic is the best word to use in this case as you have pointed out. I had thought they could have used Stanne as their clean vocalist.

Stanne is simply too awesome, both his growls and clean vocals have improved tremendously
over the years. Hard to find a suitable vocalist to compare him to, but Insomnium isn't doing too badly themselves on Shadows of a dying sun. Plus the addition of Markus Vanhala(Ominum Gatherum) as guitarist proves to be a wise decision because I haven't heard so many great solos on an Insomnium album since...well...ever.

GB, you and I like many of the same bands. Insomnium has never released a bad album and like Novembers Doom, as they mature they just continue to get better. Their new album has been in constant rotation on my iPod since its release.
