Is it safe to say Emperor is the best black metal band ever? Yeah? Okay, thanks.

No, because they only put out one full length black metal album.
Pfff. Once you invent black metal, basically any variations that result are you expanding the limits of the project that you created.

Emperor didn't invent black metal, come on now.
Listened to ITNE a few times in the last few days, and nothing out of that original Norwegian scene can touch that album. I know I'm technically wrong. But I'm so right.

Well, I kind of disagree; ITNE is one of the all-time best, but there are definitely some worthy contenders from the era.
Mayhem - De Mysetriis is definitely close. As is Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky, Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, Satyricon - The Shadowthrone, too, just to name a few of the better known examples.

I might disagree on some of those mentions and others I do agree with. But still, close but no cigar.

Well, as I said, ITNE is as good as it gets, but those albums I listed are damn close. Especially Mayhem.

If any band outside of Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost and the Teutonic thrash scene of the mid eighties can be credited with "inventing" black metal it would be Mayhem.
Though really it was an evolutionary process.

One seldom mentioned influence on black metal is VON, as well.

Agreed, but it certainly was a landmark that altered the landscape of the genre. In some ways it led to very good things, like Limbonic Art, in other (unnamed) ways...it didn't.

I'd live with Mayhem (or maybe Bathory) getting the ultimate credit though.

The melodious structure of BM known now as a defining aspect of BM (or one of THE most important aspect of it, better known as the unconventional ways of tremolo picking) was "invented," "created," "brought to life" by none other than Euronymous.

Definitely Anthems. IMO it is way better than Nightside despite Nightside being majestic as well.

And here all this time I thought I was the only one that felt this way.

Nightside for me, one of my favorite albums, period. Still have a tough time with Anthems; agreed with those who find it too chaotic. Would have to go Nightside>IX>Anthems>Prometheus.
