I've never actually seen this thread as long as I've been on here, but for all of those who enjoy underground acts, what are some of your favorite cult black/death/thrash acts? To open things up what bands were they emulating, and how were they overshadowed by lesser deserving bands? I'm talking about the underground bands the Necrovores, VONS, Morpheus Descends, and all of the bands that are sick but were the underground of late eighties early nineties. Are they reforming, and do you see them as being as useful nowadays?

I actually hang out with the drummer of the new reformation of VON once in a while, he lives out here.

Necrovore was fucking cool band.

can't say I ever got into VON though.

Deathrow had the best progressive thrash around with Deception Ignored and got almost ignored. Also, Coroner comes to mind, they never sold many albums yet remain the best Eurothrash band of the first wave.
Maybe those bands are too widely know in the metal community for SLM to consider them... In my book, they're cult bands.
Others coming to mind: Watchtower, Supuration (later known as SUP) or Morgoth (DM from Germany before they changed their sound).

Mostly thrash:

Deathrow
Anacrusis
Coroner
Vendetta
Assassin
Darkness
Holy Terror
Sacrifice
Artillery
Fastkill
Exumer
Forbidden
Sadus

Maybe I mentioned some that's not too underground such as Sadus. But yeah, most of those bands won't be discovered if you're not digging deep.

Bulldozer - Released a full-length album 2 years ago for the first time since 1988. Honestly, with some of the bands that go famous, Bulldozer were a lot better.

Mekong Delta - One of the most innovative thrash bands out there, and really ahead of their time and arguably still are. With a lot of the major American thrash bands that were/are big, these guys should have gotten their due. Maybe because most German thrash bands were known for playing a more aggression style, that maybe that's why these guys were kind of ignored. They are still active and still releasing albums, so they're still relevant in today's scene.

Necromantia - The Greek scene was pretty ignored in general, but being some of the best bm out there at the time, they definitely deserved more recognition. I think this is the only band I can think of that only used the bass instead of guitar, so that gave them a pretty unique sound. They are still active and released some material in the 2000s.

Vulcano - Still releasing material. Another great thrash act that didn't get the attention they deserved. But like Bulldozer they're getting more attention with the thrash revival and the internet, people have taken more notice.

Slaughter - No longer active, but despite that they were never really well known in mainstream thrash, they were fairly influential.

Morbid Saint - Another band that has gotten more attention with the thrash revival and led to rereleasing their albums. Better than a lot of well-known thrash acts out there.

Nocturnus - Same thing that can be said as most of the others. Ahead of their time, but never got the attention they deserved. Broken up now, though.

Agree with Morpheus Descends and Morgoth.

I consider Sadus to be a cult act, largely as they aren't as well known compared to bands like Megadeth or Exodus. Even within the context of the metal scene, just because an album may be more well known, I'd say doesn't diminish it's status as being a cult classic. Sacrifice are sick by the way

Sadus and Mekong Delta, I guess.

I suppose Elysian Fields and Devil Doll could be listed here as well.

A lot of progressive rock from the '70s are cult. Bands like Aphrodite's Child, Gentle Giant, Camel, Magma, Eloy, Van Der Graaf Generator, and so on...
