Neither war metal, viking metal, pirate metal... or sports metal.

Yeah, too many subgenres... I miss the good old days when it was basically Black, Death and Thrash.
Going even further back, it was all just basically Metal.

Anyone that hasn't given Bolt Thrower a listen, start with The IVth Crusade. 9/10.

I like War Metal, e.g. Black Witchery:

I like it, because it brings the extreme metal back to it's roots. When the Kreators, Sodoms, Hellhammers, Deaths, Mayhems, Bathorys,Destructions or Slayers began, it was not about making good intelligent, progressive music, it was all about "We want to play harder and faster and we want to be more evil than Venom!" :)

It was not about to play as good as possible and to be a better artist and to make intelligent music. It was just about raw power and speed. And that's the spirit these bands are bringing back to life.

You cant go wrong with Realm of Chaos, that album is more brutal than a lot of BDM bands these days.

All BT is awesome. Solid solid band. Everytime I hear one of their records, that's the best, Few bands with a long discography are so consistent. Perhaps Sodom is the other one that comes to mind.
